Would love some help on finalizing Scandinavia itinerary!

Hello!

I am going with my husband to Denmark, Norway and Sweden in September - around 2 weeks - and would really appreciate any help / guidance related to our itinerary ideas. We want to make sure we are not spending too much or too little time in any of these cities, choosing our transportation wisely and not missing anything obvious along the way:

2-3 Days in Copenhagen - visiting Helsingbor and Malmo
- train from Malmo to Gothenburg
1 Day in Gothenburg
- train from Gothenburg to Oslo
2 Days in Oslo
- train from Oslo to Myrdal; Flamsbana from Myrdal to Flam; Ferry from Flam to Bergen
1 Day in Bergen
- overnight train to Trondheim
1 Day in Trondheim
- train from Trondheim to Are (we have reservations to a restaurant close to Are - is there anything else worth seeing around that area?)
- train from Are to Stockholm
2-3 Days in Stockholm

Thank you everyone in advance!

Have you looked at how long each of those train rides are? You're doing one every 1-2 days, and the frequency combined with the length would make this a trip I would not want.

There are frequent flights between your cities, and they are often not expensive since SAS and Norwegian Air (among others) compete on most routes. To find flights, use Skyscanner: http://www.skyscanner.com/

And to find train times, use the Bahn (German Rail) website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en, following Rick's tutorial: http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules

I'd cut some of the destinations, not because they're not worthwhile, but because you have too much traveling in a short time.

I hope you budget time for sleep. Your preliminary itinerary seems like a run from place to place just to check off an "I've been there" list and not enough time to enjoy your visit. I would budget at least two full days to experience Copenhagen before outlying areas, two full days in Oslo and a full day in Bergen.

Not sure if you have a hotel in Copenhagen, but last August we stayed in a great funky hotel within walking distance from main train station.. Hotel Alexandra! Super! and just behind is a fantastic Italian restaurant... Loved Copenhagen.. had 3 days and did one trip out and back on an Amsterdam Card (highly recommend) Super easy to get to main train station from Airport. Great walking city, but with the Amsterdam card you can hop off lots of buses and get into many places for free or discount. We were also in Stockholm and Love it, too. 2-3 days should be good. Go to the Vasa Museum... We had that hop off and hop on bus thing... no good! too slow! The old town is a MUST! A destination I must go back, as we only had 2 days there. You'll love this trip.
