Which flight from Seattle to Stockholm?

Planning to travel in mid-May. We've looked at:

  • Iceland Air, which takes 12 hours total and includes 1hr 20min change planes in Reykjavik
  • Delta, which takes 14 hours total and includes 2hr 10min change planes in Amsterdam. The flight from Amsterdam to Stockholm is operated by KLM.

Just based on the above, Iceland Air is the obvious choice. Is 1hr 20min enough time to comfortably switch planes in Reykjavik?

But then, we wonder if the Delta flight might be "nicer". Delta has a "Comfort+" seat type that is a (small) step above economy that we've liked in the past. Is 2hr 10min enough time to comfortably switch planes in Amsterdam?

We've never flown on Iceland Air so don't know what to expect from the basic economy seats on that airline.

Any opinions on which flight to choose? Thanks!

As not fond as I am of Delta (OMG the manky food!) I would always opt for more time to change planes. Also Delta - I have not tried Comfort Class, but I have observed the seats on many flights and they don’t look all that fabulous. Since you note you’ve liked them, that could be a factor for you, obviously.

I also have had excellent experiences at Schipol with tight turnarounds… staff has pulled people out of line and let them skip to the head of a long queue if they have limited time to change planes. It saved our bacon and ensured we made our connection at least once!

Iceland Air is fine, as I recall. They are skimpy on amenities (think, one bottle of water each for the flight, unless you request more). Seats are fine. I’ve flown it only once, but recall Reykjavik‘s airport as small, tidy, and very well laid-out. Still, an hour and twenty minutes to change planes scares me. :-)

Just remember that at both airports--Keflavik or Amsterdam--you will be going through passport control.

Keflavik has this down to a science since so many people go through. Sometimes, if the airport is crowded, Icelandair has been known to hold flights.

Go to Aerolopa and find the planes you'll be on. At the bottom of the seating diagram is information on the seats.

20 min is a bit tight even in KEF which is by far the best airport I've experienced for a transfer involving immiigration. I'd look and see if Iceland air has any later flights that day. Either schedule and see if you can get on the first should that be possible or insurance flight if needed.

Sort of six of one and a half a dozen of the other. Icelandair made their bones moving passenger through KEV and vice versa. I have observed at Schipol if you have a "tight connection" (?), passport control will move to a specific line to process you very quickly. As for seats, I imagine they are all the same.

Another factor in your comfort level during the flight is that SEA-KEF is 7.5 hours, whereas SEA-AMS is closer to 10.

That should enough time to transfer with Iceland Air. They have this down to an art in that small airport.

You can book "extra legroom" seats (for a fee) on Iceland air that are equivalent to comfort plus on Delta.

I would simply look at price and go for the one that is the best value.

2h10m is fine for a change thru AMS including going thru Passport Control and then you will go thru a security line right after that.

I am a Delta flyer and I like the Comfort + seats and if you are offered an upgrade to Delta One at a decent price, go for it.

What's the fare difference?

I recommend you compare the Icelandair Saga Premium (their business class) fare to Delta's Comfort+. Icelandair just had a sale with really good prices - and they seem to have sales periodically. Icelandair might be less expensive, than Delta. 1 hr 20 minutes is plenty in Keflavik.

Have not flown on Iceland Air from Seattle but have one good and one bad report from friends that have. We are doing the RS tour starting in Stockholm on 05/18 and are just looking into the flight options. Iceland Air appears to be the least expensive return flights from Seattle to Stockholm (ARN) but as our tour ends in Bergen (BGO) we are looking into multi city flights (SEA to ?, ? to ARN and BGO to SEA. This opens up a lot more airlines and layover periods but it is more difficult to work out the total fare because we want a checked bag each and the multi city planning doesn't show the individual checked bag amounts. The multi city option allows you to plan stopovers in either or both directions as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, you guys are all very helpful!

We ended up going with Iceland Air. It's a shorter travel time, and it sounds like we should be OK changing planes in Reykjavik. We found that Iceland Air does have some economy seats with additional legroom, for an additional fee, so we went with that.
