West coast of Sweden with car

We are picking up a new Volvo in Gotenburg on the west coast of Sweden and are debating to drive north to Norway or south to Denmark. We have about 8 days before returning to Gotenburg. It will be middle of May this year. We love scenery but have been told it is all lovely there! Any help please would be appreciated. Thank you

hi pippa,

i did a lot of work in southern Sweden. Malmo, Ahus, Kristianstad area. I thought it was quite pretty there. And from that area, you can take the Oresund bridge/tunnel into Denmark/ Copenhagen area. You could even drop into Germany if time permits.

You probably can't go wrong doing either one.

I am planning to do the same trip this summer (I will be getting a V60... what model are you getting?). Here is the itinerary I am planning.

  • 2 days in Gothenburg

  • 1 travel day between Gothenburg and Copenhagen with stops in Helsingborg, Sweeden and Helsingor, Denmark (taking the car ferry across)

  • 3 full days in the Copenhagen area

  • 1 travel day between Copenhagen and Kalmar, Sweeden. I plan to take the Oresund Bridge and stop in Vaxjo, Sweeden along the way. (Driving to Kalmar allows me to drive the car through some more open stretches of Sweden and also to see a little of the country's western coast.)

  • 1 full day in Kalmar.

  • Drive back to Gothenburg, return the car, and fly home the next day.

My trip is 10 days and should put about 600 miles on my car.

One additional itinerary that I am considering (and I will post here in case there are others doing a similar Volvo trip) is the following:

  • Arrive/2 days in Gothenburg
  • 1 day driving between Gothenburg and Kalmar with a stop in Vaxjo en route
  • 1 full day in Kalmar
  • 1 day driving from Kalmar to Halmstad to Gothenburg (this should give me a few hours to explore the Islands of Hono/Ockero in the evening)
  • 1 day to drop off car :( and then take the train to Copenhagen
  • 3 full days in Copenhagen
  • Additional half day in Copenhagen and then fly home from there :(

The benefit to the plan, and why I am considering it instead of the itinerary I first posted, is that we won't have to worry about expensive or safe parking in Copenhagen. It also eliminates a rather crappy outgoing flight schedule I was facing from Gothenburg, followed by a long layover in Copenhagen. Also, I will be adding less miles on the car and needing to buy less gas. The drawback is less driving in new and exciting places which is half the fun of doing Volvo Overseas delivery! :)

If to south, you can also visit Germany and Poland. There are ferries from Ystad in Sweden to Świnoujście in Poland near the border with Germany. The best destinations in Poland are Międzyzdroje, Wolin National Park and The Old Town of Wolin and Szczecin, in Germany - Greifswald, Stralsund and Berlin. All of them are situated not far from the Baltic Sea.
Have a good travel!

Thank you all for your ideas. We are getting a XC70 wagon and have booked a couple of places starting in Trollhattan then Oslo for a couple of nights. Driving south again stopping in Lysekil and then Bastad. 2 nights in Denmark and back to Sweden. Then we are not sure. We want to visitYstad and Lund but they are close. Not sure what to do with the last 2 nights before returning to Goteborg. any ideas?
Thank you.

Have you considered Kalmar for those last couple days you want to schedule. Rick Steves talks about it in his book and the drive from Denmark across Sweden (via Vaxjo for an added stop) is doable, and a great excuse to drive the new car some more (which is a big reason why I am going there)! :)

By the way, I recognize you from the Volvo forum... hi!
