Walk from Train Station to Gamla Stan to Sodermalm

I am planning a day starting at our hotel near the train station, to Gamla Stan to do some sightseeing there, and then to Sodermalm for drinks / dinner to soak up the local vibe there.

Questions:
1. What is the "cool" part of Sodermalm, best for bars, restaurants, local vibe? Am I right that is around Medborgarplatsen, or do we have to go further afield?
2. Whatever that cool part is, is it reasonable to walk there from Gamla Stan, or would Metro be the better option? I see (a) there is construction around Slussen; and (b) it seems to be uphill to Sodermalm but I can't tell from photos how steep the walk is?

What is your advice?

I hope someone with more knowledge and a better memory can help you, because I am unsure of this response.

There is a lift at Slussen; I used it in 2023. I don't know its current status or its exact location, though I think it's quite near the T-bana station.

There's a nice panoramic walkway, the Monteliusvagen, along the edge of Sodermalm west of Slussen. It's labeled on Google Maps.

I believe you're right about Medborgarplatsen, but I wasn't looking for trendy spots when I stayed on Sodermalm.

Even aside from the situation at Slussen, there's a good bit of up-and-down when you walk around Sodermalm, which is worth exploring. There was nothing impossible for me, but there was some huffing and puffing involved. I'm a healthy but non-athletic 74-year-old who walks a lot but seldom encounters hills in the US.

I did not know about the lift, but I see it now on Google Maps - the big tower leading to an elevated walkway? Thank you for this suggestion. Unless there is something particularly nice about the walk up the hill, we will probably use that lift and save our walking for strolling around Sodermalm itself.

Take this with a grain of salt as my last visit to Stockholm was 10 years ago.

It is an uphill walk from Slussen along Götgatan to Medborgarplatsen and that section of the street is somewhat steep. I have no idea what Slussen is like now. Slussen could be confusing even 25 years ago when I lived in Stockholm.

There are lots of bars and restaurants around Medborgarplatsen and also along Götgatan and in ”SoFo”.

The ”cool” part of Södermalm used to be ”SoFo” (South of Folkungagatan, a street). There are lots of trendy shops, restaurants, and bars in that area. The tourist office still seems to have a section on it https://www.visitstockholm.com/see-do/shopping/guide-to-sofo/

Two places with great views on Södermalm are Monteliusvägen and Fjällgatan. If you have time, it is worth a stroll in either of these two areas. You’ll get those picture postcard views of Gamla Stan.

Hey I've made that exact walk starting at the train station back in the summer of 2024. I don't think the lift was operating at the time, so we had to walk up the inclined Slussbrogatan street. Personally I found the Katarina-Sofia area a delight to explore. It's overlooking Gamla Stan. Katarina-Sofia is a kinda the hipster part of town. Honestly this was probably my favorite part of Stockholm, it felt very authentic and energetic, with a lot of interesting “concept” bars and shops.

While at Katarina-Sofia we ate lunch at Herman’s (my best meal in Stockholm), it’s an all-you-can-eat vegan buffet set in a terraced garden overlooking the old town from across the water, a real hidden gem with stunning views! Great homemade quality food like Lebanese humus or vegan Japanese curry, very a very affordable price. Most of the people there were locals, but a very multi-cultural crowd, with some youth backpacker types as well. Felt like we finally found the “real Stockholm”.

Later we explored the area on foot and eventually found ourselves at a very cool bar called Woodstockholm set in a lovely treelined square. I had an interesting drink, an “olive lemonade” called Le Tribute, extremely refreshing I ordered two, and they came in these cool glass bottles, interesting they also came from my hometown Barcelona lol!
