I am figuring out if after traveling for 2 weeks in Sweden (Stockholm, Småland, Kalmar and Öland), just after Midsummer, that I would perhaps add a few days and am thinking of trekking to Visby (dropping car off first in Stockholm). I'll be traveling with my brother who loves history, so perhaps there is another historical cool town or island near Stockholm that would also be an option. Any thoughts?
Visby is a charming town that is well worth a visit. The entire island is charming. But there are many other options as well if you are interested i history. What does your itinerary looks like? And any particular historical eras you prefer?
Or keep the car and use it to see Gotland. There is a ferry from Oskarshamn to make it less of a detour. There is even a small ferry from northern Öland to Oskarshamn.
If you want to see Gotland by car, rent a car on the island. Saves you having to pay to bring the car on the ferry.
