We will be overnight ferrying from Helsinki to Värtahamnen/Stockholm and from there proceeding onward by train to Oslo. Is there a train station in or near the Värtahamnen ferry dock from which to begin the train route to Oslo? Or do you need to get to the Stockholm central station to start that journey? What is the best route or method by train? I'm a little confused by my research so far. Much obliged for any clear instructions!

There is a station near the port, but it's unfortunately only used by freight trains. So you need to book a trip from the central station.
To get to the central station you can take the metro, bus+metro or Silja's own transfer bus.

My recommendation to get to the central station is the metro. It's cheap, frequent and reliable. Although it is a 5 minute walk from the port to metro station. But if you have a lot of luggage it can be worth the extra cost to take one of Silja's buses, tickets for the buses can be bought in the information desk on the ship.
