My partner was just invited to a conference on the island of Uto in the Stockholm Archipelago for a week in August (Monday through Friday). I'd like to join, and we would probably add in a weekend in Stockholm itself immediately after the conference. I realize Uto is fairly remote, and I'm getting conflicting information on ferries from Stockholm directly to the island vs. a fairly complicated train/bus/ferry system to the island. Does anyone have specific thoughts on transport to Uto? Also, any thoughts on activities on the island that I could do for a few lazy days during the conference, or possible daytrips from Uto? I have only been to Malmo in Sweden, so would appreciate any thoughts!
I’ve only been to Utö once and it was back in the summer of 2000. When I visited, I took the pendeltåg (commuter train)to Västerhaninge and from there took the bus to Årsta Brygga where you get the ferry. It is at least a 2 hour trip from Stockholm. I had an SL card which would have covered the train and bus so that is why I would have taken that route. While it looks convoluted, public transit is quite good and easy to use.
I see there is also a ferry from Stockholm Strömkajen in the summer, but the summer timetable hasn’t been posted yet. That might be easier, but it might be more expensive.
Utö is very much a place to just relax and enjoy nature. You can rent a bike or go swimming. There isn’t much to do on the island beyond that.
