Traveling back to USA from Scotland with layover in Copenhagen

Hello! We are returning to the US from a vacation in Scotland on SAS airlines with a 13 hour layover in Copenhagen. (Flight is all on SAS airlines : EDI to ARN to CPH to ATL ). With the 13 hr layover at CPH - we are staying at the Clarion Airport Hotel at terminal 3 I think.

Two questions.... One - will we have to clear customs/immigration upon arriving in CPH - or are we just in -transit since still in the airport hotel and will only go through customs/immigration upon arrival back in USA/Atlanta.

and Two - do we have to retrieve our luggage if we checked them all the way to Atlanta upon flight check in at Edinburgh? First time travelers to Scotland from US via SAS Air and CPH connections / any and all advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

One - will we have to clear customs/immigration upon arriving in CPH

You will go through immigration when arriving in Stockholm, not when arriving in Copenhagen. But when you leave Copenhagen you will need to go through another passport check.

Two - do we have to retrieve our luggage if we checked them all the
way to Atlanta upon flight check in at Edinburgh?

Your luggage should be sent all the way to Atlanta.

If I have this correct - we will check our bags all the way to ATL when we check in at EDI for the first flight leg home. Upon arrival in Stockholm, we will have to go through customs/immigration (but without having to get our checked bags). Then take the next flight to CPH. Upon arrival, just make our way to the airport Clarion Hotel and the following day when getting on the last leg of trip back to ATL go through a passport check. At no point will we have any of our bags since they are checked all the way through to ATL. Then upon arrival in ATL - again go through the US customs.

I did forget to ask - on our flights to Scotland on SAS from U.S. ..... (ATL to CPH - then 4 hr layover - then CPH to EDI) - will there be a customs check in CPH or is it just in transit / waiting for next flight leg to EDI. Hope that makes sense. And hopefully no more questions lol.

Confirm this with SAS when you check your bag at EDI. Some airlines/airports require you to retrieve your bag when you have a long, overnight layover. I don’t see anything on the SAS website about their policy so I’d suggest being prepared for either situation.

I agree with Laura. Check with SAS to see if the will hold your bag overnight. (And remember to pack the items you will need for the overnight stay in your carry on.)

On your way to EDI, you shouldn't have to go through immigration or customs. You are a "transfer" passenger.

You don't need to go through immigration ATL-CPH-EDI but it also means that most of the shops, restaurants and cafés aren't available to you since they are on the other side of immigration.

Yes, but it can be worth double checking that. The easiest way is probably to just look at what it says on the tag.

Since you're flying from a non-Schengen country to another non-Schengen country, there are no formalities in Copenhagen. It's just a matter of walking from one gate to another. Although as mentioned, if you're looking for a larger selection of restaurants or cafés, you will need to go through immigration to the Schengen area.

And hopefully no more questions lol.

Don't be afraid of asking questions, it's sometimes better to ask than to not ask. But please, don't use airport codes when posting questions. It's just confusing.
