Hello,
Which is the better mode of transportation between these two cities? The difference in duration of travel seems negligible door to door. If train is the better option, when is the best time to purchase tickets and will we know in advance if track maintenance will significantly lengthen the trip? Looking to travel on July 29.

Train, cheaper and more comfortable. And as you mentioned roughly the same travel time door to door. Buy the tickets as soon as possible, prices only go up. There is some track maintenance planned for that day, but some departures are up for sale. And there will be no (additional) impact on those.

We took this train last July. Agree with previous comment but would add we paid a little extra for 1st class. First train out serves a nice breakfast, so it was a wash for us. The train also stopped about two blocks away from the hotel.
