Struggling with multi-citi flights from ORD to Stockholm (ARN), returning from Bergen (BGO) to Chicago. So many more options if we fly round trip to ORD/ARN instead. Would it make sense to take a train from Bergen to ARN, thus allowing us to book round trip flights from ORD/ARN. We have not been to Scandinavia before. Many thanks!
You could do that, it's a long trip by train but the scenery is great. SAS also has direct flights from Bergen to Stockholm.

There is also a nonstop plane from Bergen to Stockholm and it takes one hour and 20 minutes.
It really depends on how much time you want to spend on the journey to Stockholm Airport. What you could do is fly ORD-Stockholm and return Oslo-ORD for not much more than round trip ORD-Stockholm. Then either pick up a cheap air ticket between Bergen and Oslo or take the train. That train trip is about 7 hours.

The change to the Arland Express adds the second change and the extra time.

True, if you want to go to the airport that adds another change.
But basically in the end it depends on what you want to see and do and what your interests are.
