We are heading to Linkoping, Sweden and trying to decide whether or not a rail pass would be appropriate. This is our first trip to Sweden. Does anyone know if the Rail Pass is valid on the smaller regional trains that operate in the smaller cities? It appears there are many different rail carriers not just the SJ and I haven't seen where to find out if the EurailPass will work on the regional trains.
We will fly into Stockholm and I know the pass will work on the high speed train from Arlanda to Linkoping.
Thanks for the help.
It is probably not a good idea unless you plan to travel a lot.
There is one big national train operator, SJ. In addition, each region usually run trains as part of their public transport. In addition there are a few private companies running long distance trains on a few selected routes.
Most trains between towns (not in-city transport) are covered by Eurail passes, and certainly between Stockholm and Linkoping. I don't know of any private railways that are not covered. But you would want 3 or 4 days of significant train travel distances to make a pass pay off, and high-speed trains require separate seat reservations.
Thank you so much for the information. Very helpful.
Eurail passes are valid on some private operators, but not on all.
