Things to do in Sweden in March

Hi all,

I’ll be in Sweden this coming March as part of a winter trip around Scandinavia. I might spend a bit of time in Malmö and Lund after visiting Copenhagen, but Stockholm will be my main base.

I’ve been to Sweden before, but only during the summer. This will be my first time there in winter, and I’m trying to figure out how to best use my time. Most of what I’m finding online either focuses on Christmas (which will be long over) or activities that aren’t really tied to the season.

I’m not into skiing or other winter sports, but I’m interested in events, seasonal food, places that are especially nice to visit that time of year, etc. Open to short day trips or a weekend outside Stockholm if there’s something worth checking out.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks.

IMO, March is a difficult time to travel around Sweden, I would not label this as a "winter trip" more like early spring. In terms of weather, early Spring is very unpredictable in Sweden especially the southern part, you might still have some snow in parts, but often it's partially/fully melted by then with occasional frozen rain, you could also get random snowstorms that totally make travel difficult for several days until it all melts. Outside of the main cities, most towns feel "dead" this time of year, most people just stay home and shops/restaurants might have reduced hrs, there are no "seasonal events/foods" around this time in Sweden to my knowledge.

My honest suggestion is if you have any flexibility I'd go in Dec/Jan or later in June.

March is a very underrated month in Scandinavia. It could be my favourite month even though swimming is impossible without an accompanying sauna. The light is flooding the landscape day by day, increasing noticeably, birds are heard singing, and snowdrops will show their petals. People have been seriously considering travel destinations as vacation applications will just have been submitted. Best of all are the icicles at the edge of the forest that start to drip, refracting the light. March is the month of light, hope and promise.
