Sweden Itinerary- 2 night stay

Hello! We are two families (4 adults, two 3 year olds, one 1 year old) heading to Denmark and Sweden in mid August. We are flying into Copenhagen, staying 4 nights, and ending in Stockholm for 4 nights. We have two nights we need to book between those two cities and are looking for something less big city but still not remote camping. We would like to use public transit over getting a car. Options we’ve looked at for those two nights between are Kalmar or Vaxjo, or, going past Stockholm to stay in Uppsala or somewhere in the Stockholm archipelago like Vaxholm. We are ok going a little out of our way if it’s worth it, we can also extend our Stockholm stay by one night to add day trips for Uppsala and archipelago and just do one night between somewhere else. Any recommendations on what seems the most worth it to see?

I stayed two nights in Kalmar between Copenhagen and Stockholm (traveling by train), and I really loved it. I rented a car for one day to explore Öland. You'd probably need a minivan to do that with your group, but I do think it's worth it. I concentrated on the southern half of the island and it was the better part of a full day, but I got back in time to walk around Kalmar, and then the next morning before my train to Stockholm I visited the castle and the cathedral. It's one of the most picturesque castles I've seen in Europe.

Staying in Uppsala or in the archipelago are both good options. But if you want to break up the trip between Copenhagen and Stockholm there are some great options as well. Kalmar is as mentioned a charming place in many ways. If you want a smaller town, Eksjö is a great option, easy to reach by train. You can also consider Gränna. Norrköping is a bit bigger but also worth a stop. Or have a look at Varberg on the west coast. In the end it depends a bit on what you're looking for.
