Summer Itinerary - drive from Stockholm to CPH, over several days

Hi all.
We will be visiting friends in Copenhagen in early July.  We would like to travel for 5 or 6 days before we descend on their home.  I have been doing some research and came up with the following idea(s).  My real questions are where best to stop to break up the drive.  My husband and I will have our 13 year old daughter with us.  We tend to like action and activity  - a mix of culture, history and summer outdoor fun.

  • 3 days - Stockholm. Rent a car, work our way to Copenhagen.
  • 2 days - Drive from Stockholm to Vadstena and/or Jönköping area. Break it up into 2 different town stays?  Norrköpin, Granna or Visingsö, other?
  • 1 day - Visit and sleep in Danish Helsingør area - Kronborg castle, The Louisiana
  • 4 days - CPH

Another idea -
- 3 days - Stockholm. Rent a car, work our way to Copenhagen.
- 1 day - Drive from Stockholm to Granna (or other as listed above)
- 1 day - Drive Granna to Gothenburg, Varberg / Halmstad or Båstad (best place to stop?)
- 4 days - Drive to CPH - stop in Lund on the way (make Helsingor area a day trip from CPH)

Just so much to see - difficult to decide. One person also suggested traveling down via Visby, but since we have just one of our daughter's with us, I think she may be happier if we keep moving and exploring new places since she won't have her sister to pal around with on the island.

Open to ideas, thanks so much.

Can't she explore new places on an island?

Yes, but for some reason when I read about Visby it sounded a bit more serene. Just a gut feeling and I need something to help me make a call. It's so difficult to focus on a drive when all the places sound so wonderful. Open to suggestions

Visby is far from serene in the summer, in fact the problem might be the opposite. There is a big political festival in Visby in late June/early July but it ends on the 5th and the last days are usually a lot calmer than the first. But Visby itself is a beutiful medieval town with a well preserved city wall, it's on the Unesco World Heritage list as well. The island itself is also very beautiful. Your daugther might also appreciate Glassmagasinet, the ice cream shop in the harbour, they claim to be the biggest in Sweden with over 300 different flavours. Karlskrona is also a great place for a stop on the mainland on your way to Denmark.

On the other hand, your daughter might enjoy Gränna as well as the town in famous for its candy. But in general you will probably be happy whichever route you choose. But your plan seems very car-focused, using trains and buses can also be a good option.
