Hi. We have a week trip to Stockholm late July 2025. We have a rental vehicle. Looking for restaurant recommendations of local influences for vegetarian and/or vegan options. Thanks.
Why are you planning on renting a car if you're going to Stockholm? (Or any major European city for that matter.)
Vegetarian food is easy to find, vegan food might be a bit trickier but far from impossible. Asian restaurants are probably your safest bet for vegan food.
When we were in Stockholm last month, we had some great vegetarian meals. Badger is right that vegetarian and vegan are not difficult to find.
I highly recommend Surfers Stockholm in Normalm as well as Tabbouli and Mormors Dumplings in Sodermalm.
Thanks for the restaurants thus far.
Badger, not having traveled abroad much, my first go to is a car to rent. I never grew up on public transportation so a bit of an anomaly to me. From the looks of Stockholm, lots can be done with the public transit. I wasn't sure about getting out to visit other sites/areas outside the immediate city, figuring an auto would make that easier.
I can sort of understand that if you've grown up in North America, but have you been to Europe before? You don't mention what your plan is, but having a car in Stockholm is just an expensive headache. I've driven in central Stockholm a number of times and it is not something I can recommend. And a bigger problem is what you are going to do with your car once you arrive at your destination, parking is not always easy to find and is not cheap. I don't know what other sites/areas outside the immediate city you are thinking of, but there are few where car would make it easier.
For a week, the best option is simply to get a 7 day SL pass, and then you can travel as much as you like on buses, trams, ferries, metro and commuter trains in Stockholm (some restrictions apply if going far outside the city).
A car will likely make things more difficult. Parking is limited and expensive. There is no need to drive within Stockholm and a car will be a burden. Where are you going outside of Stockholm? For most places that a tourist would visit outside of central Stockholm (e.g., Drottningholm, Uppsala, archipelago), a car in not needed and public transportation will get you there more quickly. I lived in Stockholm for 2 years without a car. If you can let us know where you plan to visit outside of the city, I’m sure we can tell you better ways to get there.
For vegetarian options, I’d suggest checking the indoor market at Hötorget https://hotorgshallen.se/ as well as the market as Östermalms Saluhallen https://en.ostermalmshallen.se/
Rosendals Trädgårdskafe https://www.rosendalstradgard.se/about-rosendals-tradgard/ is one of my favorite places for lunch when the weather is nice. They would have some vegetarian options. It is cafe that serves food from biodynamic farms and wonderful bake goods set in an apple orchard on Djurgården.
Hermans has a vegan buffet in a location on Södermalm with great views. I have not been there in more than 20 years so I would suggest checking for recent reviews. https://hermans.se/en/

I've never been there myself so I can't comment on the food, but I don't think the view has changed much in 20 years.
Thank you all who have provided insight. I have canceled the auto rental and appreciate the insight into the metro pass for the week.
I'll start a new thread, but any input of activities to do while in town for the week? I'm laying out or activities but need to schedule. We love to explore, walk, hike. I have on the list: Abba Museum, Skansen, Vasa (although we have a private dinner/event planned for that), Gamia Stan. We'd like to visit some islands, so input on that would be great.
Hey I ate at Herman’s last year (my best meal in Stockholm), it’s an all-you-can-eat vegan buffet set in a terraced garden overlooking the old town from across the water, a real hidden gem with stunning views! Great homemade quality food like Lebanese humus or vegan Japanese curry, all for a very affordable price. Most of the people there were locals, but a very multi-cultural crowd, with some youth backpacker types as well. Felt like we found the “real Stockholm”, after the very touristy old town area.
I can add Hermitage to the list, a vegetarian restaurant in Gamla stan. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but it used to be very good.
And I agree about Hötorgshallen, I've had some great vegetarian food there.
HERMANS on Södermalm is a very relaxed world-class restaurant (no dressing up) in an older building (1850), on a charming heritage street. Comparatively expensive, this place has an extensive buffet which is a marvel, and views to rival any that can be found in Italy. Once in a lifetime.
HERMITAGE in Gamla stan/Old town is dependable and has a nice buffet with luxurious salad options included, or you can choose to fill a plate just once and pay less. A bit smaller than most restaurants it is nonetheless cozy and has a central location. When I'm in town I always go there.
LEGUME on Hornsgatan on Södermalm can be considered. Relaxed and inexpensive with a simple café style interior this restaurant has an adequate buffet, middle eastern style, with some dishes hot and some cold. Having eaten there only once I decided I will likely return there.
INDIAN RESTAURANTS are to Scandinavia what Italian restaurants are to the NA East Coast; Seemingly on every street corner. They usually have many vegetarian, and several vegan, options and are inexpensive as you pay 145-170 kr/SEK for a dish, with rice always included, and a small plate of salad almost always included (depends on which city). On Bondegatan on Södermalm i would consider INDIRA (since 1990) which is lively, a bit cramped, has vegan nan bread and it's very own philosophy; "the customer orders at the cashier followed by payment so that he can then be seated and wait to be served by the table. This has made it possible for us to maintain cheap pricing, without compromising with the quality. Our low prices have made us famous during all these years so we try our best to hold on to them. If desired – we come to your table and take your order by traditional standards". Having eaten there twice I will likely eat there several more times. On Folkungagatan on Södermalm i would recommend the dependable mainstay GANDHI.
