stockholm to tallinn overnight ferry

we have a planned visit to Stockholm and Tallinn in august. I checked the tallink silja website and pretended to reserve for 2 people.

the website wasn't very clear. without the room, the price was 150; with the room, it was the same price. I read the RS book and it says the cabins are usually for the same gender passengers unless a private room is reserved. I didn't see any such distinction in the website.

if anyone has done the overnight ferry, please clarify for me.

thanks.

I'm not seeing a price for "deck passage" and it says "please book cabins for all passengers." It looks like you'll be booking that as a private cabin for €150 (versus only a bit more if you had four in your party). If you don't want a private double, then click on "Special Cabins and Shared Places" to get a bunk in a single-gender room of the same size for €51 per person.

thanks, laura. so it is cheaper if one doesn't get a private cabin.

my next question is: is the overnight ride comfortable enough? this seems like a popular way to go from Stockholm to Tallinn. has anyone actually done it? pls advise. thanks.

I've been very happy with overnight ferries on several occasions, as long as I had a bed. These are large, stable boats, but if there's any seasickness issue, I'd rather handle it lying down. I've slept much better on ferries than on trains. The shared cabin was fine from Stockholm to Helsinki, when I shared with a Japanese girl. Dinner smorgasbord was also a good experience, with the possible exception of the smoked eel.

I don't recall there being general (no bed) tickets for these ferries. It's more like a mini cruise ship than ferry and the locals use them as such. They party late and buy cheap liquor. Silja has a calmer reputation than Viking though. Reserving a general cabin is like reserving a bunk on an overnight train. You may get roommates and most likely they will be pleasant people. Or you can reserve a private cabin. Like cruise ships, the price of cabin varies greatly depending on where it is on the ship.

You don't need a room or deck space on the overnight ferry. The ferry services offers all night entertainment. I'm not sure if the bars shutdown. I understand that a number of the passengers don't sleep during the overnight sail.

I was on Tallinn-Stockholm on Tallink's Victoria 1 earlier this year. It's a great cruise ferry but the journey time is 16 hours or so. You will need your own little cabin, your own room to sleep, wash, take a shower or lock your luggage. Other than that you will spend a lot of time on the sun deck by the bar (weather permitting) or in the night club with live music (unless you travel on a Sunday through Wednesday night).

Departing from Stockholm the first 4 hours you'are actually always close to the coast and there is plenty to see.
