Stockholm plans with kids! Day trips?

i'll be in stockholm with my two children in october for about a week. last year we were in copenhagen and loved it, hoping we'll also love stockholm!

we are planning on being in stockholm for 5 days, then taking an overnight ferry to helsinki. we'll be in helsinki for 2 days and fly directly home from there.

we are not ambitious travelers, love to enjoy a place, talk to people, have great meals, walk around. and i also need to schedule in plenty of play and relax time for my two 7 year olds. i'll be single parenting 3-4 days in stockholm as my spouse has to fly off for work.

do you think we should plan on a day trip from stockholm, or is there enough to keep us happy for 5 days? is there something amazing outside the city that we should not miss?

I think you will find enough to do in Stockholm. I’m sure you have read up on the main tourist sites, but I’ve added a few things kids might like:

Read them Pippi Longstocking (or get an audio recording for them to listen to before your visit) and then take them to Junibacken
Go to one of the playgrounds. There is a nice one in Humlegården http://www.stockholm.se/-/Serviceenhetsdetaljer/?enhet=72ad48c7398844bba064f76f3de670e7 and there is also Ivar Lo’s Park https://www.visitstockholm.com/see--do/attractions/ivar-los-park/
If you visit Skansen, do it on a weekend when they have more things open. There is also an Aquarium at Skansen that is small but I think it would be fun for kids.
Go to the foodhalls at Hötorget or Östermalms Saluhallen
Go to Vete-katten for pastries and coffee http://vetekatten.se/en/
Go to Chokladkoppen on Stortorget and get hot chocolate and a cake http://www.chokladkoppen.se/english/
The Kulturhuset has a kids library has some English books and art activities. It is called the ”Rum för Barn” http://kulturhusetstadsteatern.se/Bibliotek/Rum-for-Barn/Discover-Rum-for-Barn-together/

laura, thanks so much for your recommendations, those seem like exactly the types of things we are looking for. :-)

my kids already love pippi longstocking, we'll reread the books, it'll be a great way to get them excited about the trip!

Thank you for asking this question as I was wondering about these questions as well. I have heard that the science museum Megamind is also really fun for kids: https://www.tekniskamuseet.se/en/

I am also looking for good ideas for day trips as I think we will stay in Stockholm for 4 days and I'm interested in places that are fun for kids nearby but no more than maybe an hour by train each way if possible.

vasa museum didn't make it into the video (bc their dad took them before i arrived) but they found it very interesting.

re: 4 days and a day trip, there really is quite a bit to do with kids in the city, and if you're not moving too fast, you won't run out in 4 days.
