Stockholm - Oslo Train Replacement Bus

Hi All,

I will be going to Europe for the first time and am planning a trip between Stockholm and Oslo at the end of May. The SJ site lists an itinerary of a train + bus with a transfer at Karlstad C- which I assume is due to track work. What are these buses like? Are they like city buses or more like Greyhound/coach style that will take you directly to Oslo? While it's still a few months away, would it make a difference if I purchase tickets now vs at the end of March? (or will there be any schedule/itinerary changes between now and then?) TIA!

It will be a coach. There would be an outrage if SJ tried to use city buses between Karlstad and Oslo. And I don't think it would make a huge difference if you wait a month to buy tickets.

You can get a ticket on Flixbus through their app for half the price of a train ticket from Stockholm to Oslo. You might want to check them out, if you don't mind a 7 1/2 hr bus ride. My experience after over 40 years in Sweden is that trains here are not especially reliable.

SJ just updated some of their train routes in the late spring through mid-June. You may want to check again to see if there are any changes. I booked a direct high-speed train from Stockholm to Oslo in June yesterday.
