Stockholm - Long Layover at Night

Hi!

My fiancee and I have our honeymoon planned for this summer (Netherlands and Belgium) and our flight home has a 13-hr layover in Stockholm that has us landing at about 7:55 PM. It's going to be too late to really do a tour of the city, but I was looking for some tips on some things to do, since we're not staying in an airport all night. We may end up getting a hotel room in the city for the night and doing dinner / drinks but wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Thanks!

Eric,

dejavu.

If youre up for it, take a walk along the riverfront. there are alot of nice and expensive toys on the river. Also, some of them had parties going on too. Also, look at walking in the older part of town with the curvy streets.

happy trails.

I'm with you...I would never spend the night at the airport!
Arlanda - Stockholm by express train takes about 20 minutes. So you should absolutely go for it!
You can walk around Gamla Stan as said previously. Perhaps have a drink at the Sky Bar downtown for a nice view. I felt so safe in Stockholm that I could have walked around all night...
I have stayed at the Scandic Hotel Norra Bantorget and was pleased with location, room, breakfast and help that I got from the staff.

Have fun!!!

It will be light fairly late, you could easily walk around Gamla Stan in the evening. If you want to get a traditional Swedish meal in a restaurant, you might consider Restaurang Prinsen on Master Samuelsgatan which is kind of a brasserie with lots of Swedish specialties, or Bakfickan which is a small place on the side of the Opera house. If you want something really casual (sandwich, pastry, coffee), Kaffeekoppen on Stortorget on Gamla Stan is a cosy place on one of the main squares. Another option is Pelikan on Södermalm. Pelikan is a very old-school pub; a place where you could get meatballs or a herring plate or pork knuckle and a beer. It is not my favorite place, but it definitely has a lot of character (it was featured on an Anthony Bourdain episode).

You didn't mention the date you would be there. If you happen to be there over Midsommar, then lots of stuff will be shut down.

Hi Eric
I have been researching Stockholm for a visit after our Baltic Cruise. Gamla Stan the old city is very quaint as mentioned above and would be great to see. Also an interesting place seems to be the "Ice Bar". It is a place made entirely of ice, redone each year. A visit is about 40 minutes and they will lend you a cape and gloves! I do not think it is far from the central station but is the opposite direction of Gamla Stan.

Eric, Stockholm is just a beautiful city. Getting in that late, I am not exactly sure, but I might suggest walks around Gamla Stan - you could walk past the palace and see some of the beautiful sights. Also, I've heard that walking around Kungsholmen is great -- you could possibly go swimming even that late or rent a kyak (I don't know how late those folks are open); you can also walk past and at least view the outside of the Stadhaus, the City Hall where the Nobel prizes are awarded. If you want to stay downtown, consider Kungsträgården -- it is a park, the King's Garden, and often is hosting all kinds of parties, festivities, concerts, etc. many of which are just free. Another possibility is Gröna Lund, the famous amusement park. I believe it may be open until 11:00 pm in the summer and it is not far away.

It is too bad that you will miss the Vasa museum -- a must see in Stockholm!
