Will be in Stockholm 12/2-13....seeking ideas for day trips from Stockholm and other "not miss" event/activities for my wife and I, in and around Stockholm. Christmas markets....and Swedish events.
Upon starting our time in Stockholm and Scandinavia tour, we took an evening dinner tour of the harbor and archipelago. This was in the early Fall. Fantastic event. Connect through the attached website for more information. I see there are Christmas related excursions. The archipelago islands and waterways are beautiful, the trip interesting and the food was first rate.
Skansen has a Christmas Market on the weekend along with a number of holiday activities. Definitely visit on a weekend. There is also a market at Stortorget in Gamla Stan.
The Nobel Prize banquet will be at Stadshuset (City Hall) on December 10th. Obviously, you won't be able to go but you should plan to take the excellent guided tour of the Stadshuset and you won't be able to do that around the date of the banquet, so plan accordingly. You can catch some highlights on TV.
Lucia Day is the 13th; eat some lussekatter (saffron buns).
Drink some glögg. It will be available at the Christmas Market.
Stores can be very crowded on the weekends and don't be surprised if you need to take a queue number to be served.
Possible day trips include Drottningholm, Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, and Uppsala. Hours are generally reduced in winter.
Expect it to be dark by 3 pm.
jrmeier's recommendation reminded me of something ...
In December, the boats will have a Julbord (Christmas buffet) which you might want to do if you want to experience a traditional Swedish smorgåsbord. Expect a lot of herring dishes along with both hot and cold dishes, traditional favorites like meatballs, Jansson's Temptation (a potato dish), maybe some reindeer, salmon, shrimp, ham, cheese, desserts, glögg, etc.
