Stockholm & Copenhagen or Stockholm and Gothenburg ? 6 nights in and out of Stockholm in early April

Hello, my husband and I will be traveling to Sweden in early April and I am looking for advice on a 6 night itinerary. Our flights are in and out of Stockholm. We are trying to figure out if its best to stay all within Sweden eg: Stockholm, Gothenburg and or somewhere else or to see Stockholm and Copenhagen. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

We will be in Denmark/Sweden in early April also! Our itinerary is focussed on Lund because our daughter will be studying there, so probably not a normal tourist itinerary, although we will be doing some sightseeing also.

We land in Copenhagen, and leave immediately by train for Lund for a few days. Lund does not feature prominently in travel guides but it seems really nice, with an old town, university, lots of parks, an outdoor folk museum. And the IKEA museum is an hour away by train.

Then we train up to Stockholm for a few days to see Gamla Stan, City Hall, Vasa Museum, ABBA Museum, etc. We'll be there for Easter, and I hear there is an interesting Easter celebration at the outdoor folk museum on Djurgarden.

Then overnight train back to Copenhagen via Malmo. In Copenhagen we will see Tivoli Gardens and not yet sure what else.

I have only been to Scandinavia in the summer. Setting weather issues aside:

Six nights will give you five full days and perhaps some additional hours. Stockholm is a lovely city with a lot of sightseeing options spread across multiple islands. You can keep yourselves occupied there for 5-6 days. Then there's the university town of Uppsala, an easy day trip from Stockholm with very frequent rail service taking as little as 38 minutes. You wouldn't need to pre-plan a trip to Uppsala.

I spent multiple nights in Gothenburg and enjoyed that city, too, but travel time by train will be at least 3 hr. 25 min. each way. That would mean making hotel arrangements in advance, and rail fares look as if they can exceed the equivalent of $100 each way. You'd probably want to buy the train tickets somewhat ahead of time for a better price, and I see a good number of sold-out trains on tomorrow's schedule.

I haven't been to Copenhagen recently, but it is obviously a world-class city. If I wanted to split my time between Stockholm and Copenhagen, I'd want a multi-city airline ticket into Stockholm and out of Copenhagen, or vice versa, to avoid the need to return to my origin point. That trip by rail takes at least 5 hr. 30 min. each way, which is a lot of time to spend in transit for a short visit to a major city.

You have lots of attractive destination options. I'm a slow traveler, so I'd stick with Stockholm and places accessible on day trips, but you might want to branch out.

With just 6 nights and flying in and out of Stockholm, I would recommend staying there with a possible day trip or two.

I will be staying in both Stockholm and Copenhagen in May, but I have 2 weeks total for my trip.

Even flying into Stockholm and out of Copenhagen would be tight with 6 nights.
So I agree with Carrie, stay in Stockholm and add day trips depending on interests. Ideas:

  • the archipelago
  • Uppsala as mentioned
  • Sigtuna
  • Linköping that has Gamla Linköping, an open air museum with an old town center and the Swedish Airforce museum, or combine with Norrköping that has a lot of old industrial architecture in the city center.

Also note that Easter is in beginning of April.
