We have 1-3 nights in August available for a stay on one of the islands near Stockholm. We will not have a car and would like recommendations for a place that includes room & board and has swimming nearby.

A car is more or less useless in the archipelago so that is not an issue. And swimming can be done more or less anywhere.
When you say near Stockholm, how far are you willing to travel?

Well, we will be walking onto a ferry and have limited time so the main thing would be an island that has swimming and interesting places to visit, good restaurants but is not too big since we will be walking everywhere, perhaps biking. A few hours on a ferry but not all day.

There are around 30 000 islands in the Stockholm archipelago so there are a few to choose from. But you could look closer at Grinda, Ljusterö, Sandön (Sandhamn), Möja, Svartsö or Utö. Some of them are a bit further out though.
