Stockholm Accomodations

Hello Everyone!!!

I am going to Stockholm this summer and I am looking at staying on Gamla Stan. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to stay on Gamla Stan or very near by-less than 0.2 miles?

I looked at three places online already: First Hotel Reisen, Rica Hotel and Lady Hamilton. I liked First Hotel Reisen becuase the rooms with windows facing the water have a nice view. Though it is on the pricer side. :-/

Also, if there are other nice accomodations off of Gamla Stan that face the water with nice views please share.

Thank you!!

Hopefully others can recommand some hotels in Gamla Stan that are affordable...Not an easy task! ;)

Public transport transportation is very good in this city...so it would be easy to stay somewhere else.
In case you do not get many replies...I just want to tell you I liked my hotel in the center of Stockholm. I stayed at Scandic Norra Bantorget...and was pleased with location, clean room, wonderful breakfast, helpful staff...and affordable! It was a short walk from the very nice Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel and its beautiful Sky bar and the view of city/water...so I guess that also a good choice. But more $$.

Bon voyage!

Last summer, I used Hotwire and scored a nice hotel in Stockholm at a good price and would do so again if unable to find a suitable hotel otherwise.

I have also been looking for about a week for September. I thought Copenhagen was expensive but Stockholm is even higher. It is difficult to find a twin accommodation in either Gamla Stan or near the central station for under $250. The hotel the other responder recommended would be less if you prepay. I glanced at hotwire, and it does appear you can get something for around $230, if prepay. Our problem is there are going to be 3 or 4 couples traveling together and with the prepay it becomes more complicated. We would have to book all at once, and if one couple had to cancel it makes the travel insurance difficult. I was surprised that even Rick's recommendations were higher priced. We did find one location that appeared very nice that may work for you. It is in Sodermalm, which is next to Gamla Stan. When last I checked rooms were around $200, but they only had 2 rooms with private bath, Hotel Hornsgaten, I do not think it has a water view.. Good luck with your search.

I understand that some people feel the need to book in advance...but I do not.
I have not paid over a 100$ for any hotel rooms...And I have been to Oslo, Stockholm (stayed in center @ Scandic Norra Bantorget), Helsinki and Copenhagen. I stayed in near the city center in all 4 cities.
I tend to book LESS than a month before my trip...Of course...this goes against some people's way of planning and I understand. But thought I would share that it is possible to get some hotel rooms at an affordable price in Scandinavia.

Metro system is very good in Stockholm and I would not worry about being in Gamla Stan...or if you do not mind spending 250$ a night...then ...go for it! Lucky!

Good luck!

Hi Sharon
Well I finally found one near Gamla Stan that was reasonable, if a little spartan. It seems most places on Gamla are either about $300 a night or a Hostel. This one is near the Grand Hotel, convenient access to the subway and ferries. I actually found it in one of my old Rick Steves books, it is Stiftelsen Drottning Victorias Orlogshem (a mouthful), It is nothing to speak of appearance wise and basic but great location, private shower and W/C, breakfast, elevator and clean. It gets great reviews on trip adviser. You have to email them for a rate but for Mid week in September, everything elsewhere was $225 or more and we are spending 3 nights. Here we have a much better location and it will be about $180. I figure we will not be in the room that much and the location was key for me and I probably looked at 40 or more places.

why pay $250 to be close to Gamla Stan? I booked from www.airbnb.com for mid-June this yr and I got a private room for 2 persons for $67. You can start an a/c in airbnb (bed and bath) and you can see plenty of Private room, shared room or entire place. You can choose the host and the price. Try that. You can take a cab to Gamla Stan if the place you choose is far and is still much cheaper. Just google the distance betw the host address and the sightseeing spots.
