Stockholm

What would be the top five things to do well in Stockholm? We will be there over a long weekend.

Here's what I enjoyed (in no particular order) when I visited a little more than a year ago.

--Royal Palace: If you have visited Versailles, it's very similar. However, it is in fact the largest palace in Europe, and I had a lot of fun checking it out and learning all about Swedish royalty.

--Archipelago tour: You can take very short or very long ones, but my friends and I took a 3-hour one and relaxed on a boat while a tour guide have a history of the city and some of the islands. It's a great way to spend a day if it's sunny.

--Gamla Stan: Just about every European city has an old town, and Stockholm is no different. I wouldn't say this one is particularly unusual, but somehow we always ended up back there because it has some good restaurants. Paganini was fantastic, and I'm generally really picky when it comes to Italian food. I highly recommend this particular eatery. There's also some good Swedish food here and throughout the city. It's not just Swedish meatballs, haha.

--Ride the subway: Some stations have great murals. Plus, like most European cities, it's the best way to get around town.

--Vasa Museum: I didn't love it; everything I needed to know about the ship I learned from Rick's show. That said, my friends LOVED it, and most everyone else does too so it would be silly of me to say don't go. A majority of people think it's really cool, so you should probably check it out. You can probably do it in 1-2 hours.

What not to do: the ABBA museum. It's a ripoff, and unless you are the biggest ABBA fan on earth don't go. And even then, proceed cautiously. It's very lame.

Have fun!

I thought the ABBA Museum was a lot of fun ... but I agree that it is for ABBA fans. I thought the interactive exhibits where you sing karaoke or dance in a music video were a hoot.

My top five would be
1) Vasa Museum - Make sure to take the tour and watch the film on how the ship was raised. I think this is one of the great museums in the world. I've been there at least half a dozen times over the years and always learn something new
2) The excellent tour of Stadshuset (the city hall)
3) Gamla Stan
4) Skansen in the summer
5). Your choice ... a trip to an island in the archipelago, Millesgården, Fotografiska Museet, etc.

Thanks for the information - lots to do there! Hope the weather is nice - we've been lucky so far. We do have an old town/museum tour booked for Saturday but I would live a boat tour!
