Sights to see while in Gothenburg

We will be in Sweden for one week-flying into Gothenburg in September. We enjoy active vacations and will have a car. There will be four adults traveling together. We are looking for recommendations for "must see and do" to take full advantage of our time in the region.

It would be helpful if you told us a bit more about what you're interested in and what you're looking for.

We enjoy spending time outdoors, experiencing the local culture and visiting out of the way places. We will be spending a half day at the Volvo museum and possibly the botanical gardens in Gothenburg. From what we have read, it seems that 2 days will be plenty of time in Gothenburg. We are looking for ideas to explore outside the city. We would like to stay on the west coast. We enjoy hiking and spending time on the water but will not be able to kayak this trip due to shoulder injury. We are thinking of spending some time in Marstrand and have been trying to decide if we should take time to go to Oslo. We are looking for suggestions and ideas on a seven day itinerary-which may or may not include time in Oslo. We fly in and out of Gothenburg.

Liseberg Park is not at all like Disneyland, and it does play a part in local family life.

When is the trip? In September the weather can be a bit unpredictable, especially in the later parts of the month. You should also rethink the car in my opinion if you don't know what you want to do. A car might be useful, or it might just be a waste of money.

I do not agree that 2 days is plenty of time in Gothenburg, there is much to see there and you can spend a week in the city if you want. There are some great museums in the city, personally I really like the art museum. Marstrand can be a nice day trip, but it depends on the weather. If it's raining, it might not be as nice. I can also suggest a trip to the southern archipelago, also depending on the weather. Although even if the weather is nasty, just taking the ferry there and back can give you some nice views. The same with the ferries on the river, they have the advantage of giving you nice views of the city. Other day trip suggestions are Strömstad and Varberg. Oslo might be a bit far away for the time you have, but it's of course possible to spend some time there. And if you like the Volvo museum, there is also the Saab museum in Trollhättan.

As always in Sweden, hiking can be done almost everywhere. It depends a bit on how far you want to hike, but one of the islands can be a good option for hiking.
