Renting summer house in Sweden

We just did the RS Scandinavia tour. I'm interested in the practicalities and recommendations for renting a summer cabin in Sweden for 2-4 weeks to do outdoor activities and enjoy nature. Has anyone done this?

Many do it every summer. Do you have any specific questions?

Janeen, sounds like a wonderful idea. I'll be following this post to see what is suggested.

Badger, I think OP would like some ideas on how to go about renting a cabin in Sweden. Can you recommend companies that rent summer cabins or what areas of Sweden she should focus on? Any advice on what to look for in a cabin rental or what to avoid? Just Googling "cabin rental Sweden" is quite intimidating. Thanks for helping.

I can write a lot on the subject, so it would be nice to know a bit more about what the OP is looking for. What kind of area e.g., for how many, and what kind of standard they want.

You won't find any companies renting out cabins, but a lot of people renting out their cabins. There are also campgrounds with cabins all over the country.

The province of Dalsland in the south-west is worth considering. Situated between our great lake of Vänern and the Norwegian border, favoured by our most prominent popular historian Dick Harrison who recommends it as a undeservedly forgotten vacation destination, Dalsland is surprisingly close and very scenic, yet sparsely populated. There are runestones and remnants of iron age hill forts. Dalsland is well connected to our second city of Göteborg (airport code: GOT) via train, with at least 10 departures daily (90 min or less), has forests, nature reserves and an abundance of lakes.

OP here...

We're just two people, so we don't need a large dwelling. Having access to the area via train would be immensely helpful. We are interested in day hiking and just enjoy being in nature, near the water. Having access to a nearby market town or city would be helpful.

In terms of standard, we would like a cabin with essential amenities -- indoor toilet and shower -- with no sharing of these facilities with other guests.

It sounds like a cabin at a camping site might be what you're looking for, since you mention other guests. There are many to choose from all over the country, but if easy access by public transportation, close to water and a private bathroom are important I have a few suggestions:

  • Lysvik. The first place that came to mind is Lysvik in Värmland. A small village with a camp site next to a lake, they have a few cabins with a bathroom. The village has a small railway station with trains to Karlstad. There is also a grocery store, a café a pizzeria and a restaurant. As well as lovely nature. https://lysvikscamping.se
  • Rättvik. Right next to Siljan in Rättvik you can also rent cabins, big ones or small ones. There is a railway station within next to it and central Rättvik is on the other side of the tracks. https://en.firstcamp.se/destinations/siljansbadet-rattvik/cabins
  • Gräsö. There is a hostel next to the water on Gräsö that also has two cabins you can rent, I'm not sure about the standard in the cabins though. There is a grocery store on the island, and Öregrund is just a short ferry ride away if you want a town. http://www.grasogard.se/
  • Vrångö. A charming island just outside Gothenburg. The island might be a bit small for a 2-4 week stay though. https://kajkantenvrango.se/en/small-boat-house/

But there are many more, and a good place to start looking is https://camping.se/en
