Rail reservations needed?

I will be traveling from Copenhagen to Goteborg, then from Goteborg to Oslo a few days later. My travel dates are pretty much fixed, but I was wondering if there is a need to reserve tickets ahead of time, or if I would be able to get a ticket on the day of departure without any problems?

Thanks.

I don't know if there's strictly speaking a need, but you can save a lot of money on Swedish train tickets by booking them in advance. I got a ticket from Stockholm to Malmo for 195 kr (less than $25), when the same ticket bought at short notice would be 3-4 times that amount.

Thank you. I hadn't really thought of that aspect. (I was thinking about the flexibility to sleep in or get an early start, etc.)

There are two aspects to reservations. Seats on the trains and pricing. It is rare for any train to completely sell out and with the frequency of trains if the 8 am is sold out then the 9 or 10 will have seats. The exception to that might be the weekend after Christmas or some other major holiday. The other aspect is that the trains systems are adopting the no change, no refund deep discount advance sales on the web policy. Obviously this kills flexibility but the saving can be substantial if you are willing to lock into a schedule. So if you want flexibility then you pay more from the ticket.

See www.sj.se for these advance rates. To my view there's less decipherable rhyme or reason to them than in some other countries; they can vary as much by departure time as by any other reason.
