Overnight layover in Stockholm

My family of 4 (2 young kids) will fly into Stockholm in June in the afternoon. 4:30 pm. We thought about heading over to Gamla Stan but worry that by the time we leave the airport and travel there that stores will close etc. and it may not be worth the expense. Does anyone have a recommendation for something to do/place to stay closer to the airport (Arlanda) that would still give us a feel of Stockholm? Maybe restaurants/ small shopping area etc. Or is it worth it to travel to Gamla Stan for only a couple hours of shop time? We fly out early the next morning so shopping the next day isn't an option. Thanks

What sort of shopping did you want to do? I see that NK (a fancy department store in Norrmalm, north of Gamla Stan, where the big stores are) is open until 8 M-F, until 6 on Saturday, and until 5 on Sunday. I assume most other large stores will have similar hours (Europe doesn't have the 24/7 shopping culture the US does). However, by Googling I see that one other department store, Åhléns (the City branch), is open until 9 PM on weekdays.

There are small stores (similar to 7-11's) open late, if you just want to pick up some snacks, magazines, etc.

Gamla Stan is lively in the evenings, but not with shoppers - there's a variety of restaurants and bars, and it's pretty to walk around at night.
