I have been researching the options for transport from the airport to my hotel in the old city (First Hotel Reisen).
1) Taxis seem to be covered by a maximum rate of about 650 Swedish K.
2) The train the that goes from the airport to the train station charges about 220 K each person. If we do that, we still have a short taxi ride to our hotel.
3) Paying for a private car seems to be generally more than 1 or 2 option.
Any specific experience from a recent traveler?
I took the train when I was in Stockholm last July.Easy to find once you are in the airport. A pleasant ride on a very nice train. The ticket desk was also very helpful with tourist information,maps etc..
Looks like the Arlanda Express Adult ticket is 295 SEK, but 350 SEK for 2, or you can buy on-line single ticket for at least 7 days in advance for 195 SEK.
There are buses from Stockholm Central to the First Hotel Reisen on the Gamla Stan.
Arlanda Express has some good discounts for smaller groups. Another option is Flygbussarna coaches, 99 kr one way if bought online.
Note that taxi is a free market. It is recommended to use one of Taxi Stockholm, Sverigetaxi and Taxi Kurir. The airport (maybe not at all terminals) and the train station have special lanes for contracted taxis that won't scam you.
We took the excellent Atlanta Express. I believe they give a discount to seniors. We also bought a transit card once we arrived in Stockholm, also discounted for seniors.
Contact your hotel, there is a hotel taxi rate, which my hotel provided. In 2015 it was 380 or 390 SEK for airport to hotel door and vice versa. The hotel can give you a coupon for that rate. However, you are also within walking distance of gamla stan (old town), assuming mobility, so the Arlanda Express becomes more efficient if you don't have to get a taxi from there. However, it looks like the cost is mostly a wash between the two without your quick taxi ride, so the contracted airport/taxi rate would be best for you.
