Night Train Stockholm-Malmo

Anyone had recent experience with this train (in either direction) and care to give an unfiltered review?

What I'm particularly interested in knowing is:
- is a second class cabin comfortable for two people and two medium suitcases (larger than carry on) (ie: is there enough storage)?
- is the sleep comfortable (ie: the bed itself, noise, light, bumpy carriages)?
- is first class worth the upgrade, if we're not going to use the ensuite shower?

I have seen several YouTube videos so I know a little, but all of them are by one person travelling alone in a first class carriage.

I haven't taken that train but want to be sure you realize there are quite a lot of daytime trains making that trip in less than 4-1/2 hours. There are also trains departing just after 5 PM, 6 PM and 7 PM with similar running times.

I have not taken that specific route, but there's luggage space below the bottom sleeper and above the door; it should be enough for 2.

Regarding overall comfort, however, at 7.5 hours this is a short overnight route; you'd be lucky to get 6 hours of sleep. 1st class won't change anything to that, and might not be worth it for that reason.
This is why I'd personally opt for an evening train and sleep in a hotel in Malmö.

Otherwise, the rolling stock is 40-50 years old, but it should all have been refurbished by now; ride quality will largely depend on track quality (which should be decent given that trains can reach 200 kph on that route).

I did see that one, thank you. Unfortunately, like all the others I'd seen, it is a single traveller in first class - not really giving us the sense of scale we'll need for two people in second class. But thank you!

You have probably seen it, but the recent Simon Andersen YouTube video shows a very brief shot of a second class sleeper cabin near the end of his review although that's not much to go on. The comments on the video are somewhat interesting.

Have you taken any night trains previously? I've experienced a couple (UK and Norway) and realized that no matter the comfort of the bed or the smoothness of the ride, it's just not likely that I'll get a decent night's sleep on a train and I don't want that to negatively impact the arrival day's agenda. So, personally, I would only opt for one if it was very reasonably priced and/or made a lot of sense for my itinerary. But that's just me. Others certainly enjoy them. And maybe I'm just scarred from my overnight journeys in the seats on The Ocean between Sackville NB and Montreal in the 90s.

I'm also in the midst of planning a trip to Sweden and Denmark. I couldn't resist the new Halifax-Copenhagen nonstop. Thankfully I was able to score a couple of pretty good hotel deals. Hopefully you're having similar luck.

Travelling on a Night Train is often a wonderful adventure in itself. Do not hesitate to try it. I mostly went in couchette (from the capital to the northern university town of Umeå) which sleeps six, but now feel i must try a 2nd class cabin soon, when ÖBB inaugurates the very tempting international route Malmö - Basel in April 2026. Much depends on having rewarding departure and arrival times. Secret travel tip: Being a bit dazed upon arrival can be an unexpected benefit as you feel as if you have travelled much farther then, making the new destination seem wonderfully foreign. There is something to be said for moderate temporary sleep deprivation. The deep feeling of having covered a great distance that such a train journey provides can be treasured.
