I went to Stockholm the first time on June 19, 2014 for 4 days this year. It is easy to get around and definitely no guide or travel Co. is needed. I arrived Arlanda airport and took the Flybussara bus (SEK 119) which is about US$19 and in 45 mins, I arrived Cityterminalen and walked 2 mins across will be the Central Station and T-Centralen (subway) is 1 level below. Got my money in local currency at the Bankromat ATM and I bought the 72 hrs pass (which is valid for tram, bus, subway, and ferry) from the Information Center (right in the middle of Central station). The Information Center is very helpful, all you need to do is just to ask. There are 7-Eleven, McDonald, Pressbyran, Waynes Coffee etc. many shops at Central Station.
Took Tram #7 and you will pass Noriska Museet and Vasa Museum is behind it. You can walk from Central Station to the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan (Old town). I also joined the dance around the Maypole at Skansen for the mid-summer celebration on June 20th. ABBA museum is also close-by and I went there all by taking Tram#7 and walked a little. Tram#7 also pass NK Department Store and the Guardian, there are many food kiosks in that shopping center. Stockholm is a safe city and feel free to walk around on your own.

by the way, there is `Hop on Hop off' bus or ferry that they drop you off at tourist spots. I took the tram so to save.

Are you on a cruise? Even if you aren't, Cruise Critic will have lots of reports of people who have taken one day tours of Stockholm, on their Northern Europe And The Baltics Ports Forum: http://tinyurl.com/by57g9z
