Malmo Countryside Itinerary

Hello Everyone! My mother and I will travel to Sweden to see where her ancestors are from. This has been on her bucket list for a very long time! The road trip will include the towns Skurup, Slimminge, Balkåkra, Blentarp, Svenstorp, Hällstorp, Annelöv, and Barsebäck. We plan to spend a short time in each city, as well as Malmo. Are there any sites or interesting things to do, places to eat, or interesting places to stay near these places? We enjoy castles, museums, history, art, culture, food, and churches! We will have a rental car. We would appreciate any help you can offer, as this is our first time to Sweden, and we would love some direction from the more experienced. Thank you in advance!

The website for Skåne visitors helps you very good to find interesing places, e. g. castles or food.

Personally I liked Ystad from times when I sailed with my parents. From there a turbo ferry gets in a short time to Danish island of Bornholm - worth a day trip with car, maybe also one night. Today also a destination for crime literature fans (in footsteps of Mankell's Wallander).

Fun fact: Malmö has a neighborhood name Sorgenfri which has the meaning careless / no more worries - nearly also in German language.

Visit Skåne is a good start. I'm also not sure how you define town, but some of the places you list are hardly big enough to be called villages so there is really not much to see in them. Apart from your family history.

How long is your trip? I have actually done that area in a day with some Japanese visitors and we stopped at places like Ales stenar, walked around Ystad and had lunch, and even headed to Falsterbo for a walk. I think it was an 8-hour adventure. That area can be done in 2 full days and you will have seen about all there is to see. It's really not big at all.

Anyway, I suggest Lund, a university town which has an outdoor museum of different Swedish house styles. There is a very old cathedral with a huge, very interesting clock inside. You could stay a night or two there.

You could drive up the west coast of Sweden towards Helsingborg and take the ferry over to Helsingør in Denmark to see Hamlet's castle. A bit north of Helsingborg is Sofiero Palace, where you can visit the garden. Gothenburg is only 4 hrs north of Malmö so you might want to drive up there for a day or two as well.

Sweden is beautiful and we don't have the hoards of tourists you find in other countries.

Thank you, everyone, for your generous suggestions! We are trying to decide between 1 or 2 days in the area. Your ideas are all wonderful!
