Less than 24 hours in Stockholm in late August

Hello. I'll be flying to Stockholm (Arlanda) from Bergen, on my way to Helsinki. Single middle age woman traveling alone. Would it be more advisable to stay at a hotel closer to the airport? If I stay at a hotel near the airport is there a train that I can take to explore the city for the brief time that I have? My flight from Bergen arrives in Stockholm at 11:55 am. I haven't booked my flight from Stockholm to Helsinki yet but I have options of taking either a flight that leaves at 6:40 am or 1:20 pm. I'll only be in Helsinki for the day as my flight leaves the next day. Thanks.

If you are leaving at 6:40, I highly recommend you stay near the hotel. The airport is quite a distance from downtown Stockholm. We did the same thing at the Oslo airport (we were leaving at 6:00) and I got a hotel off of booking.com (it was on sale and cheaper than the web site of the hotel was showing) You might try looking there. There are several options for transportation into Stockholm. The fastest (and most expensive) is the Arlanda Express. https://www.arlandaexpress.com. We did the bus which was cheaper, but took longer. https://www.flygbussarna.se/en/arlanda With limited time, it might be worth taking the train. Here is an article on the subject:
http://europeforvisitors.com/europe/countries/sweden/stockholm-transportation-airport.htm. It will be a short visit,, but better than sitting in a hotel room. Do your research so you know what you want to see, how to get there from the train station (where you are left off), etc. Have fun!

Stay at the airport. They have a really fast train that runs from the airport to the center of town in 20 minutes.
The only problem I found with that is that it will cost you 540 SEK or $60 dollars roundtrip. So I ended taking the working class route a bus and a transfer to a slower train that ends up at the same place as the Arlanda Express except 40 minutes later for about $6 or 50 sek LOL. But if you are flushed or some one else is paying for it go for it. It is the most expensive in Europe I've ever been to. The Gamla Stan is nice

Thanks. If I stay at the airport, I would need to find a hotel that has a (free) shuttle running from very early morning to late at night. Any advice as to a hotel near the airport?

You didn't give us a date, but I put July 11th into booking.com. The Radisson Blu is $125 and is attached to the airport. I haven't stayed there, but we stayed at the sister hotel at Oslo airport. It was very nice and we just walked to the airport. Their buffet breakfast starts at 4:30 am., so you might be able to enjoy it as well. The Clarion was located in the same area and was $113.00. I would read booking.com reviews and trip advisor before booking, but you have some good choices right at the airport. it sounds like the Radisson is the one jazz+travels stayed at so you have a first hand report. Of course, prices may vary depending on your date and what cancellation policy you want. (We took a non-refundable room to get the cheapest price.)

Edit: I just noticed there are 2 Radisson Blu hotels at Arlandia Airport. The Sky City is the one that is in the airport and is $125. The Arlandia hotel is a little cheaper and provides a free shuttle. It is 8 tenths of a mile from the airport. Their shuttle starts at 5 AM and they do not mention an early breakfast option. Just be aware if you book, which one you are looking at.

Thank you for the replies. I'll be arriving in Stockholm 29 August, departing 30 August. Looks like staying at a hotel near the airport is the plan. I don't want to be stressed out worrying whether I'll miss my flight or not by staying in the city. If I buy the train ticket in advance it seems to be a little cheaper.
