My mom and I will be visiting Denmark and Sweden at the beginning of June, flying in to Copenhagen and out of Stockholm. We're planning 4 nights in Copenhagen and 4 nights in Stockholm, with 2 nights in between that are not planned. I've been considering 1) Gothenburg (2 nights), 2) Vaxjo and/or Kalmar (either 1 night at each or 2 nights at one or the other), or 3) going straight from Copenhagen to Stockholm and adding a night to each. We are currently planning on sticking to train travel, but would be ok with renting a car for a day or two if it made sense. We enjoy history and cultural sights, not as into art museums. Any thoughts on those 3 options, or are there any other places I should consider?

I recently returned from. a 12 day trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm and four days plenty to do. See my trip report, Spring in Copenhagen" from April 24 "And now Stockholm" from April 26. Perhaps this will give you some ideas,

If you haven't found anything really interesting on the way it's more convenient to add daytrips from Copenhagen and Stockholm.

There are so many great day trip options from Copenhagen. So many that I’m having a difficult time narrowing mine down for my upcoming trip.
These are my top picks as of now: Roskilde, Hillerod, Helsingor/Elsinore.

I would add a day to each city and then do day trips. You’ll get to stay in same hotel which makes it more convenient. And it will be easier later to just go from Copenhagen to Stockholm.

Thanks for the responses - we are just adding a day to each city, and I agree there are a lot of good day trip options from each.
