Itinerary for 3-week Scandinavia trip

Hello! We (a couple, mid-50s, active but also enjoy relaxing) are going to Scandinavia for 3 weeks in August, and I would love some feedback on our itinerary. We have round-trip flights to Stockholm as I found a fantastic fare, so the trip starts and ends there, no matter what.

Here's what we have so far, which is loosely based on Rick's 3-week Scandinavia by train/boat itinerary:

  • Day 0 -- land in Stockholm in the evening
  • Days 1 - 3 -- Stockholm, then night boat to Helsinki
  • Days 4 - 5 -- Helsinki
  • Day 6 -- boat to Tallinn, overnight there
  • Day 7 -- afternoon flight to Oslo
  • Days 8 - 10 -- Oslo
  • Days 11 - 15 -- Norway in a Nutshell / extra Sognefjord side trips, ending in Bergen on day 14, flying to Copenhagen day 15
  • Days 16 - 19 -- Copenhagen
  • Day 20 -- train to Kalmar
  • Day 21 -- Kalmar and train to Stockholm, stay near airport
  • Day 22 -- fly home early morning

Does this make sense? Are we spending too much time someplace and shortchanging somewhere else too much? Flying somewhere when a train would be more enjoyable?

I like your itinerary except for one thing - you've left no real time in Bergen, which I love. I would take one night from Oslo and one from Copenhagen and add them to Bergen.

I've been to all the places on your trip, and I'm roughly in your age and activity demographic. I did Norway last May, and I did the other parts of your trip in 2012. I think it's a great itinerary, and you could certainly be happy without changing a thing, but here are a few suggestions.

  • I would want one more day in Stockholm and one more day in Bergen
  • I'm not sure you need 5 days for NiN, but I guess it depends on what those extra Sognefjord side trips might be. But I think you can get an excellent, full experience of the Sognefjord region in 3-4 days.
  • Four days in Copenhagen is great, but if you wanted to cut it back to three to add a day in Stockholm or Bergen

Also, have you looked into flights from Tallinn to Oslo? You might want to compare with flights from Helsinki to Oslo, and if that looks better (cheaper or more options), take the ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn, and then do Helsinki afterwards.

Another option to consider is fly to Bergen instead of Oslo and do NiN from west to east, ending in Oslo. Then you could take an overnight ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen.

You will love Scandinavia whatever you decide!

Thank you both. I appreciate the input very much and will definitely look at getting another day in Bergen. I was thinking we'd get there in the morning on one day and leave in the afternoon on the next day, and just wasn't sure there was enough to keep us busy for two days there.
