Has anyone on this forum taken this train? Would this be scenic in August? I know the train between Flam and Oslo is worthwhile due to the wonderful scenery. I have the time, and it’s affordable, but I could also fly via Norwegian for about $100 (plus the costs from each city center out to their airports). I will have time to cover all the things I want to see in both cities. Thanks.
Partly. It is nothing like the mountains along Bergensbanen but it is in general not that bad. Especially the parts along lake Vänern outside Karlstad, as well as the hundreds of smaller lakes the train passes. And the view of Stockholm when arriving is not that bad either. On the other hand there are also parts with nothing but endless forests.
The train isn't really high speed at the moment though. SJ had plans to introduce high speed trains on the Oslo route last year if I'm not mistaken, but then the pandemic came and currently Oslo is served by Intercity trains.
Should you decide to fly, consider SAS as well. They have better planes and better service at a price that is usually competitive with Norwegian. And if price is the most important thing, the train costs a fraction of flying.
Thank you again, Badger, for your informed counsel.
