Immeln lake vs Dalsland for canoe trip

I'm planning a canoe trip in Sweden in late August.
The plan would be 4-5 days with camping.
I have some paddling experience.

My research so far makes it look like there's 2 areas that pop up more than the others: Immeln Lake and the Dalsland area, and probably countless others.

Does anyone know if there are notable differences between the two

  • More/less tourists
  • Longer/shorter days and/or portages
  • More relief, better views
  • More risk of wind
  • Longer/shorter typical trips in terms of number of days
  • Better camping opportunities
  • etc

Thanks for any advice.

There are, as you mentioned, countless options. There are a bit over 100 000 lakes in Sweden, as well as several rivers. So is there any reason you've narrowed it down to Immeln and Dalsland? Personally I can't see any reason that Immeln stands out more than other lakes in the area. Dalsland is a great option, but there are many others as well. Do you prefer lakes or river? How far are you willing to travel in a day? Are you looking for organised camping spots or wild camping?

Thanks for the answer.

I would say:

  • I prefer lakes
  • 15km/day would be typical
  • I just want to rent the canoe and take care of all the rest myself, including camping

In that case you have tens of thousands of lakes to choose from. But the first suggestion that comes to mind is Siljan, maybe a tour around Siljan could be something that suits you. There are also a couple of larger lakes in Småland that can be fun. And don't disregard Vänern, it is a big lake but there are some archipelagos in the lake.

But there are many other options as well and my honest suggestion is to not stress too much about finding the "perfect" lake. There are many great ones. Like several of them in Småland, e.g. Sommen, Bolmen or Åsnen. Or the Fryken lakes in Värmland.
