I'm traveling from Hamburg Germany to Stockholm in December, should I fly or take the train?

Hi, I'll be traveling from Hamburg to Stockholm in December, should I take the train or fly? I love the idea of seeing some of the countryside by train, but if I won't be able to see much in the winter, should I just fly and save time? Also, do the hop on/off boats run in the winter?

Thanks!

A quick look on Rome2Rio shows that in this case, flying is faster, even taking airport travel and waiting times into account. Unless you really enjoy long train rides, I'd only take the train if you intend to stop off along the way.

Which HOHO boats are you referring to? When I was in Stockholm (2003) and Hamburg (1999) neither city had such boats. They both had various boat tours of their waterways, but they were not HOHO.

The train will take at least 11 hours and involve a change in Copenhagen. Due to the Swedish temporary border control, you will also have to change in Kastrup Copenhagen Airport (the last station before the border) for the border control and again in Malmø Central for the fast train to Stockholm.

I would fly between Hamburg and Stockholm. In late August 2016, we took the train between Copenhagen and Stockholm; the scenery was nice but not wow. A few lakes but the train goes pretty fast, so you just go by quickly. If you were leaving from Copenhagen because you were staying there, I'd say take the train for the convenience.

According to the Hop-On Hop-Off brochure, the boats' season is May - September; the bus has the same season, however, check www.redsightseeing.com for bus departures during October - April.

Thank you all so much for your advice! It was very helpful, and I really appreciate it! I've decided to fly, and have found year round hop on/off boats and buses. Happy Travels!
