I want to travel from Stockholm to Oslo on June 2 via high speed train. When I go to the Swedish rail site there are only two trains listed- both in the afternoon. Other websites indicate there are 3-5 speed trains daily. Why can’t I find them? Would like to leave around 10:30….
Thanks for any advice.
Thanks. It looks like the train I was hoping to take may not be scheduled on my travel day due to track maintenance. Any chance this could change between now and June as I can wait to purchase my ticket.
Generally if you are planning a train trip far in the future and not seeing what you expect to see you are just to early. Just wait a bit.
There is likely a daytime track work that week so I don't expect more trains showing up.
Vy usually has trains Gothenburg-Oslo, but Vy tickets aren't released yet so I can't know for sure. Currently you can go Stockholm-Oslo with a change in Gothenburg 10:07 - 17:44.
I have read that the VY tickets are released 90 days in advance.
I know this is a dumb question but how does one book the Stockholm/Gottenburg/Oslo train?
I understand how to book the Stockholm to Oslo but not how to route via another city.
Many thanks for your patience and advice. (We usually rent a car….)
On the sj (Swedish) website you can book via Gothenburg as a single transaction. The list of options will show whether it is a direct journey or via Gothenburg (the easy way to see the latter is 1 change (or byte in Swedish).
I know you have asked for a train but there are two morning buses from Stockholm to Oslo (route 70) which you can also book on sj.
I just mention this so you have the options.
On Vy (Norwegian) website you can only book the direct trains.
There are also buses from Gothenburg station to Oslo (same journey time).
Note that Finnish railways (yes, really) also run a competing train on the Stockholm to Gothenburg route- https://vrresa.se/en
They took the place of Flixtrain on the route.
So you could separately book the Finnish train for part one, and on vy for Part two.
To go via Gothenburg with SJ+Vy there is a "filter" function on sj.se where you can add "Göteborg Central"/Gothenburg in the "Travel via" box.
I cannot thank everyone enough! This is so very helpful. I am an experienced traveler in many ways but don’t usually travel by train. Many thanks.
There is a bit of odd advice in this thread. But to clarify things, most of the direct trains between Stockholm and Oslo are run by SJ and you buy the tickets from www.sj.se, Vy has nothing to do with them. Vy also has trains on the route, but not very frequently (once weekly). And Vy uses regional trains on the route, so I do not recommend them.
Normally there are 5 daily trains between Stockholm and Oslo, but there is probably some maintenance planned in Värmland early in the day so they have to cancel the morning and mid day trains. There are some construction projects going on in Värmland so that might happen. It's not impossible that the earlier trains will be "uncancelled", but very unlikely. If there is a departure that might run, SJ usually shows the train in the booking system marked "Not open for sale yet". Since there are no such trains I think the two trains shown are your direct options.
There is also the option of travelling via Gothenburg, but they are not for sale yet. Probably because Vy (that runs the Gothenburg-Oslo trains) hasn't made them available yet, June is still far away. But booking that options is as mentioned very easy, if you don't see the options just add Gothenburg as a via station. You can of course book the two trains separately, but you really shouldn't do that. It means that if the first train is delayed, you are on your own and have to buy a new ticket for the next leg.
VR is as mentioned also an option between Stockholm and Gothenburg, but in my opinion SJ's trains are much nicer. Especially if you get to travel on one of their renovated ones.
Thanks Badger for this useful summary of the options and your thoughts re. the likelihood of SJ adding the earlier train I would like to take. ( seems pretty unlikely)
Now considering a flight as I am not sure I want to spend close to 8 hours on a train- although I understand it is a lovely trip.
I don't know what you're planning, but adding a stop in Gothenburg is also a good option. The city is well worth a few days.
We are in nearly the same situation - we want to take the 10:30 train from Stockholm to Oslo in mid-May, and it doesn't seem to be available due to maintenance. Please let us know what you end up doing, we're still trying to sort through all the options.
A stop in Gothenburg is not in our plans although it sounds tempting.
We will probably fly. It’s more expensive but we have to be out of our Air BnB in the morning. Waiting for the 15:30 high speed train doesn’t sound appealing. Nor does taking the train/bus combo which is an 8 hour trip.
Of course you have to factor in getting to the airport early to get your flight, etc.
what are you considering?
Even though the 10:30 train is not available on the Monday we wanted to travel, we found that it is available on Sunday, one day earlier. So we ended up moving our travel plans by a day so we could take that train.
Also, we found several places that pointed to "rail.ninja" for purchasing train tickets. That site seems to be quite expensive, and also does not know about the scheduled maintenance on the SJ trains, and a Swedish friend of ours had never heard of it. We purchased directly from sj.se, which looks like it's the best way to do this.
Rail Ninja should be avoided. It has a dreadful reputation.
When I look at the Swedish rail site I don’t see the 10:30 train on Sunday…..
Yes, it varies with no pattern that I can see. The 10:30 high-speed train looks like it is available on May 25, but no other dates after that until June 6. For our plans in May we apparently got lucky...well, unless they later cancel the train we bought tickets for. We hope that doesn't happen...
Good luck with whatever arrangements you make!
Best of luck to you too.
