What's your plan and how do you define "area of Gothenburg"?

We rented a car from Hertz last summer (at the airport, and returned at the airport). We did not drive within the city center of Gothenburg, but visited an area about 2 1/2 hours west of Gothenburg. When in the city, it is easy to walk, take a tram, or taxi. The Park Avenue Hotel (Elite) near the Poseidon statue on Kungsportavenyn is a big corporate type place where you will have a generous breakfast buffet, feel safe, and it is very clean and comfortable, lots of dining options in there if you don't want to go out, and locals go there, too. Taxi stand out front, near the art museum, opera house and on the big avenue with shopping and restaurants. There is another Elite hotel in town, I don't know it, so take care if you are booking the one I describe to be sure it is the right one. Here is a link to the one I know .https://www.elite.se/en/hotels/gothenburg/elite-park-avenue-hotel/ The Beatles stayed here in the 60's.
You might want to go see Marstrand, a nice day trip to an island near Gothenburg. In Gothenburg you can go to Haga, the old town. It has grown and gentrified over the years, but is still full of unique stores, restaurants. Fiskekorke is the big fish market in an old church building, Saluhallen is a great food market with restaurants (we ate an early dinner there last summer). Do a touristy thing and take a Paddan boat tour, a great view of the city from the canals and the harbor. Eat a shrimp toast with French fries and a Pripps Blå (that's a beer brand). There is a new Volvo "museum" opening in April (the World of Volvo), it is in Liseberg, an amusement park. Sjömagisinet is a very fine seafood restaurant, but I haven't been there in several years. Great views and even better food and service! Fine dining. Have fun!

You rented a car to travel 2.5 hours west from Gothenburg?

I recommend Gothia Towers as it's right off E6 and has parking. I do NOT recommend driving within Gothenburg unless you know the city. There's construction, trams, one-way streets. However, you can easily get to E6 from Gothia Towers. For anyone coming from Landvetter Airport, the airport bus stops right across the street from Gothia Towers at Korsvägen.
