Golden Jubilee Itinerary help in Sweden - March 2026

Hej!

I am hoping someone can help me plan an itinerary.

I am an American woman. I have wanted to visit Sweden since I was 14 years old. I have still not made it there for one reason or another, and I will be turning 50 next year!

I have been saving to visit for my "Golden Jubilee" and I'm finally getting to the planning stages so I can start booking whatever I need to, etc. I am planning to go with my husband (we never did make it to a honeymoon) and potentially my daughter, who turns 16 just a few days after my birthday. She may not want to go, though.

Anyway, I have been interested in Swedish language, culture and music. I became obsessed with the band Roxette as a teen, so I definitely want to include West Coast Sweden in my trip (Halmstad, Ostra-Ljungby, Hotel Tylosand). I also want to see the Northern Lights if at all possible!

Hubby and I like to walk and have no problem with public transportation, or driving ourselves if it's not too tricky to do so. I would love to explore the countryside, farmland, the archipelago, Gamla Stan, little red cottages, and anything else worth seeing! We love architecture, art, music and nature. Also food!!! I want to experience the locals and the language since I have studied that for many years on and off (I can understand some but am definitely still a beginner - I can read and understand it better when it is written but I need to work on my vocabulary.

Anyway, I'm trying to cram all of those things in in about 10 days or so.

Any suggestions on order of cities to start with. I would likely be flying into Stockholm to start, unless someone knows of a better option.

Tack for hjalpen!

PS - I'm sorry, I'm using a keyboard that won't allow me to add the umlauts!

Imponerande att du har lärt dig svenska, det är få som ger sig på det. Men jag hoppas att du ska få användning av dina kunskaper!

Are you planning a summer trip or a winter trip? If it's a summer trip you can forget about the Northern lights unfortunately, they won't be visible. On the other hand, Halland is charming in the summer. And if you want to add Halmstad and Östra Ljungby it might make sense to fly open jaw, to Copenhagen and back from Stockholm. It should be possible to book that with non-stop flights both ways, either with SAS from New York or with Air Canada from Toronto. There are many archipelagos, do you have any preference for which one you want to see? You have a lot things on your list but it should be possible to cram it in to 10 days, although if you can make it 11 or 12 that would make it easier.

And if you like Roxette, I hope you are aware of Gyllene Tider, Per Gessle's previous band that sing in Swedish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXv44gmJpfA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ll0e7ws5UE

Total cultural immersion. How intriguing! Let's see what can be done... Sweden through the eyes of Roxette. FADING LIKE A FLOWER: This music video is centered around stadshuset (City Hall) which you should have no trouble at all recognizing and visiting. Remember to explore the park with it's wide Venetian steps by the water and exceptional vistas. HOW DO YOU DO: Assorted charming birds-eye early 90's views of the capital which are well curated and capture its ambiance and identity. LISTEN TO YOUR HEART: Footage from a summer concert inside Borgholms Slottsruin (castle ruins) on the Baltic Sea island of Öland. Enchanting and culturally significant. Heartfelt singing. With bare feet.

I got to meet MF when we where both in the audience during a show at the Cirkus arena in the 90's. This must have been during an intermission as she was walking around quite freely, having some time to herself though she must have been recognized. I briefly praised her singing on tour. She seemed content and relaxed and complimented me on my memory. I am so glad I took the chance. A certain celebrated celebrity housewife was performing that night, sharing her cares, her advice and her singular singing voice with the audience. I recall she was Australian.
