Glass Country

I have heard that the glass factories are not what they once were. Are they still worth a visit if in Southern Sweden?

I didn't have a car when I went to Sweden in 2022, and I decided the factories might not be worth the considerable hassle of reaching them by public transportation. Thus I can't provide any insight on the factories. I thought the glass museum in Vaxjo was very worthwhile, however, and the co-located emigration museum was also good.

Of course they aren't, everything changes. If they are worth a visit or not depends very much on your interests.

I visited the glass kingdom about 20 years ago so no recent experience but here are a few things I’d suggest you look into as you do your research. I visited during the off-season and went with several friends from work and I must confess that our pre-planning was pretty weak; we somewhat randomly drove from town to town stopping at various glassworks. We did not see a glassblowing demonstration or any of the artists at work. If I were visiting today, I’d look for these opportunities. For example, it looks like Kosta offers this https://www.kostaboda.com/kosta-hot-shop

Also, a number of the glassworks are owned by Orrefors Kosta Boda. We probably visited about half a dozen places and several were very similar because they were owned by the same parent company. I’d suggest seeking out some of the smaller glassworks in addition to those owned by Orrefors Kosta Boda so that you see more of a variety.
