We will be in Stockholm for a few days and looking to take a ferry to Vaxholm from downtown Stockholm. We wish to spend a fews hours in Vaxholm. Looking for the ferry schedule and has anyone else done this? Any recommendations?
Many people have done it. The schedule can be found at www.waxholmsbolaget.se
Yes, we took the ferry to Vaxholm from Stockholm last year in August. We took the 10 am Cinderella boat from Stockholm Strandvagen to Vaxholm. You can see the schedule at www. stromma.com We purchased our one way tickets online in advance. We got in line early so we could enjoy the upper deck on the Cinderellabatarna. It was a lovely ride through the Archipelago. The sculpture fountain that we passed at Nacka Strand is really cool.
For the return to Stockholm we took the Waxholmsbolaget boat from Vaxholm to Stockholm. It is an older wooden boat. We paid on board and showed our ticket when we disembarked. There is a schedule board by the harbor in Vaxholm, so you can decide what time you wish to return.
Vaxholm is a very charming waterfront town. We walked along the harbor area and saw red painted gift shops and lots of boats. We especially liked the Hembydsgarden Cafe which had a wonderful cake buffet to choose from... You could sit outside by tables in the garden overlooking the water. To get there we walked along Soderhamnen, passed the Hotel Vaxholm and walked left on Strandgatan to Fiskaregatan where we saw picturesque red and white painted houses. Walk right on Kungsgatan and you will see the cafe.
This was a very fun day for us.
Thank you all for the information.
My family did the ferry as a day trip six years ago. We rented bikes and explored the island and enjoyed a great lunch at Hembygdsgaard cafe (https://maps.app.goo.gl/5jCe14FTQ2Y1MJ136). It was a great introduction to the archipelago.
That looks like a great idea - bikes and that cafe looks perfect. Thanks.
Cinderellabåtarna are tour bouts, and I do not recommend them. They are very expensive compared to Waxholmsbolaget, especially if you're going to Vaxholm. And they are not very frequent, you have two daily departures to Vaxholm to choose from with Cinderellabåtarna, compared to 2-4 per hour with Waxholmsbolaget. And the only advantage they have in my opinion is that all their ships have an onboard café. But the views are the same.
