We are trying to decide between these two day trips for our stay in Stockholm as we do not have time for both. We are staying in Gamla Stan and Stromma is not offering the Drottingholm cruise while we are there in first half of May. any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim S.
We drove to Gripsholm and loved it! The castle is my phone screen saver, it's gorgeous if viewed from across the inlet. If you can, take the English language tour, but frankly I'd try the Swedish one & just ask them for highlights in English. (English is at 3:00PM, May to September.) https://www.kungligaslotten.se/english/royal-palaces-and-sites/gripsholm-castle/visit-us/guided-tours.html. OMG the stories of intrigue of the kings! Gripsholms Vardhus hotel is just across the waterway from the castle & they have an amazing, old restaurant. An ice cream sitting in one of the recliners on the dock facing the castle is also nice if you have time. (Disclaimer, I'm not a fan of huge castles, so haven't been to Drottingholm. I do know you can get there by land as well as boat.)
It's a special interest, but we chose Drottningholm specifically to see one of the three remaining unaltered, un-renovated, with original scenery, baroque court theaters in Europe. (The other two are in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic and Gotha, Germany.)
