Daytrips/Hiking near Stockholm

I have tried searching the forum, but have not found exactly what I am looking for. We have 1 day to do either a day trip or nearby hike. Are there any really unique hikes that are close to Stockholm and relatively easy to access without a rental car? I saw the one hike amongst the giant trolls but that isnt near by.

We are considering Uppsala if we cannot find any great hikes, but open to other suggestions. It will be 3 women who have mixed interests. We love hands on activities, being outdoors, and experiencing the local culture. We have several museums planned on our trip so not looking for another place to visit just for a museum, but do love unique history. Any other places with very traditional Swedish experiences will be appreciated (examples include biking in Netherlands, visiting hot springs in Iceland, etc)

I spent most of my Stockholm time in search of art and interesting architecture, not what you're looking for. But I wonder about a trip out to one of the islands in the archipelago. I just have no idea which one(s) to suggest.

I did like Uppsala.

We did a daytrip to some of the islands. Fjadurholmarna was a favorite of ours.

There’s a nice hike with many Bronze Age stones just south of Stockholm, can’t remember the name of the place, on the commuter rail line.

What time of year?

You might consider going to one of the islands in the archipelago. Grinda might be a good choice as it has a section of the new Stockholm Archipelago Trail and it is not too far from Stockholm. It takes about an hour and a half on the ferry. You might take a look at the various hikes in the archipelago:

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas. I love the idea of a hike with bronze age stones! Will try to find what that one is. We will definitely be taking in lots of architecture and some art as well.

laura thank you for the archipelago trail link! I will check that out.

We will be there in June and do not mind a 1.5 hour ferry as that would be a lovely experience in and of itself.

I've been digging up information for my daughter because she likes to run, and we will be in Stockholm in July, so I've been finding some areas for her to run. Sandanciso, who is a frequent poster here, told me about the island of Djurgården. There is a national park there with walking and biking paths. She said she runs there a lot and it's really beautiful. My daughter plans on going there to run. Plus it's very easy to get to from the city center. You can get there by public transportation, using bus, tram or ferry.

Just one word of caution. I was also looking up information about the Archipelago. There's a lot of hiking trails there, and I think that was mentioned above. One of the things I found out was that the area has a lot of ticks, and many of them carry encephalitis, and of course Lyme Disease. If you're planning on doing a lot of hiking while you're there, I would strongly consider getting vaccinated for that. https://www.cdc.gov/tick-borne-encephalitis/data-maps/index.html

Here is the information from the Archipelago website that actually mentions this as well: https://stockholmarchipelagotrail.com/questions-and-aswers (scroll down to "Dangerous Animals)

In the Stockholm Archipelago, we are fortunately spared from dangerous animals. However, you should be careful not to step on a viper (adder), as this would require medical attention. The most common nuisance in the archipelago is the tick. They are found everywhere, and you should make sure to remove them as soon as possible. If you are not vaccinated against TBE, we strongly recommend that you get vaccinated. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and/or TBE (tick-borne encephalitis).
