Day trips in Scandinavia- are Drottingholm Palace and Uppsala worth visiting?

Hello everyone,
I am leaving on Thursday for a 2 week trip to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and FInland.
There are several excursions (day trips) offered by our tour company, but I can't afford them all.

Rick Steves raved on Fredericksborg Castle, so I think that's a go,
but I can't seem to find a lot of information about Drottingholm.
Has someone been there recently who could comment?

Also, trying to choose between free time in Stockholm or an afternoon in Uppsala.
Thoughts?

Thank you so much for weighing in!
Faith

What are you interested in and what do you want to see and do? Also where does the tour takes you?

But in general, yes. Both Uppsala and Drottningholm are worth visiting. Although an afternoon in Uppsala is a bit short, but better than nothing I guess.

Public transportation should work well for either of those places and might be considerably less expensive than an extra-cost tour excursion. Plus you'd have more control over the time at each place.

I was there in May and took the City Commuter train from Stockholm to Uppsala on one of our days pre tour with RS. An afternoon may not give you enough time there because the train stops a few times and takes at least an hour one way. Maybe that’s not a problem for you as sunset is around 11 pm so the afternoon could stretch into the evening. We enjoyed lunch and wandering the town. We didn’t visit the University or go into the cathedral, it’s closed I heard. Lots of people watching which I find fun.

Taking the commuter train to Uppsala is a bit of a waste of time when there are regional trains that take 30-40 minutes. And the cathedral is not closed. Although it is a cathedral, not a museum, so it might be closed for tourists if there is something going on in the cathedral.

When we visited Stockholm our Swedish friends gave us a list of “must see” places and Drottingholm was on it. We took a boat across Lake Malaren to get there.
If you don’t wish to tour the palace inside, the grounds and gardens are beautiful. This is where the King and Swedish Royal family live not in the Royal Palace. .

I spent a week doing all of the sightseeing in Stockholm essentially by myself with the Stockholm pass. I never got closed to bored. You definitely should spend free time in Stockholm. The island with most of the museums (Djurgården) is a treasure. I actually ran to Drottingholm palace from Sodermalm (literally encountered a single red-light to cross the entire way), toured the gardens and palace, and then took the ferry back and then jumped into the water in Langholmen on the way back to my hotel.

Drottningholm Palace is well worth the visit. We took the bus there then enjoyed the boat ride back. I have not been to Uppsala.
