Hi! I am going to Stockholm at the end of May and we will have 7 days. Can anyone recommend day excursions from Stockholm? Are there any must see tours? Thank you for any advice.
I have not been to Stockholm (but hope to); however I just used the search function of this website and found a number of suggestions that would interest me. I typed in day trip Stockholm - try that and see if it helps.
There are several easy day trips from Stockholm, depending on what your interests are.
Archipelago - you can take a boat on your own or go as part of a tour for a beautiful day trip into the islands outside Stockholm. Vaxholm is close and easy to do on your own by boat from central Stockholm. There are several other nice islands a bit further out such as Grinda and Svärtso. All three are covered in Rick's Scandinavia or Sweden guidebooks, with details on how to get there by public ferry. If you want to visit as part of a tour, Stömma runs several options - www.stromma.se
Uppsala - is about an hour north by direct train from Stockholm. It has the oldest university in Scandinavia, a beautiful cathedral and some Viking buriel mounds just outside of town in Gamla Uppsala.
Sigtuna - Known as the oldest town in Sweden, it's also one of the cutest, although a bit touristy. You can visit on your own by taking a train to Märtsa and then bus #570 to Sigtuna (about an hour from Stockholm) or you can take a sightseeing cruise in summer from downtown Stockholm (about 2 hours each way - www.stromma.se).
Drottingholm Palace - Residence of the Swedish royal family, is an hour by boat from downtown Stockholm on lake Mälaran. You can tour the palace and gardens as well as beautiful baroque theater. It can also be reached by subway and bus in about half an hour from downtown (T-bana to Brommaplan, then any bus #300 series to the palace).
