Copenhagen and Sweden August 2026

Hello!
We are are a family of 5 with school aged kids excited to visit Scandinavia. We've been before. Here is our plan. Open to any input :)

Coming from Seattle....
2-3 nights Copenhagen
3-4 nights Styrso
2 nights farmstay South Gotland
2 nights Visby
2 nights Stockholm
Home

First, 2-3 nights in Copenhagen. Show the kids Tivoli, visit the VIking ship Museum in Roskilde, possibly either the castle in town or the Hamlet one outside of town. Jet lag recovery.
Then take the Train from Copenhagen to Gothenberg and ferry out to Styrso for some island time. Take kids into Liseberg for one day and explore Gothenberg either on this day or another day. Hike on Vrango too
Rent a car in Gothenberg and drive through Southern Sweden to ferry port in Oskarshamn. Ferry to Visby. 2 nights farmstay in souther gotland and 2 days in Visby exploring.
Return to nyvashamn and return rental car. Train to Stockholm for last 2 nights.

I'm especially interested in thoughts on having a car on Gotland. I think we want to in order for the farmstay to workout. But we could also fast train Gothenberg into Stockholm and just take the very from there. But the car sounds nice for stopping along the way in Southern Sweden to see cute villages, and for the freedom to stop with the kids. Maybe see some towns in Smaland. (kids love Astrid Lindgren). Should we stay a night maybe to break up this long travel day?

Did you make a decision? I don't see answers. We are trying to decide between Visby and Gothenberg. Thoughts?

If you're going to Roskilde, have you thought about visiting the cathedral there? It's just beautiful, and there are so many Danish kings and queens who are buried there. There is even a room set aside for the current queen of Denmark. I actually liked it better than the Viking Ship Museum; but then, I'm not a kid. 😊

With regards to heading to Stockholm, you certainly could spend the night somewhere to break up a long travel day, but that only gives you one night in Stockholm, which is very little time for seeing that city. So I would decide what you want to focus on. If it's on the actual trip itself, then spend more time on the road and stop where you like and so on, but if you want to see Stockholm, then I would make sure you have at least two nights there, if not more.
