I need to find out whether my U.S. `magnetic' debit card can be used in Sweden. I heard that their ATMs only take chip cards. Is there any ATMs used magnetic card? Same issue to credit cards too.
All ATM machines take good old fashioned magnetic cards.
All merchants take the same. The only serious issue you might have is with automatic ticket or POS machines (like unmanned gas stations or toll booths).
The other good news being that Sweden has no toll roads - - except the Malmo-Copenhagen bridge and whatever that other one is up on the E6 that crosses into Norway south of Sarpsborg.
You're on the right track with the advice above. See more at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/money/cash-machine-atm-tips.
I read this RS link already but just wonder whether same for the ATMs in Sweden or it is just for continental EU.
We just came back from Stockholm and we had difficulty with cc at retailers. They would not accept without a pin. A debit card saved us
I have requested to get my cc replaced with a chip and pin card. So, I hope it is ok to use there. do the ATMs in Sweden take non-chip ATM card?
My daughter is currently (as of June 12, 2014) in Malmo, Sweden and her chip and pin Visa credit card (issued by a credit union) is rejected multiple times by vendors (including a restaurant). The one store that take the card is just 7-Eleven so far. Not sure in Stockholm, will they take the US chip credit card there? Please help if anyone knows it. Thank you.
