Ok, my apologies for asking this, but I have been unable to use the Vy app in the US to buy tickets. I understand that the app won’t permit online purchases from the US. Someone told me that for an Oslo to Stockholm rail ticket on Vy (about 6 hours so not true bullet but definitely faster than local trains), I would need to use the Vy website and pay via PayPal. I have opened a PayPal account but haven’t gotten the process to advance beyond the “Click here to pay” button. Maybe because I’m trying with an iPad? Any suggestions? Does anyone know for sure that PayPal will work for purchases from the States? Thanks!
My understanding: SJ runs the trains. Vy Norway accepts Paypal but doesn't sell those tickets. Vy Sweden does sell the tickets but they don't accept Paypal. The problem with US cards is that they lack 3-D Secure. A few years ago I know that you could whitelist your card by contacting SJ customer service, not sure if that is still possible. I would just try without whitelisting first and the contact SJ if it isn't working. https://www.sj.se/en/
That someone obviously don't know what they're talking about. Trains between Stockholm and Oslo are run by SJ so you buy the tickets from the link above, or through SJ's app. Vy has buses from Oslo to Stockholm though and are happy to sell you a bus ticket.
Vy has had problems with cards without 3D secure (seriously, talk to your banks), but I think SJ has handled them a bit easier.
For our great Scandinavian adventure that was killed by COVID, I used my regular credit card for the SJ tickets but PayPal for Vy. At that time, I had the same card I used all over Italy on my latest trip. I bet it still works the same way.
